this is a little snip of something but idk if I should make it into a whole fic.... lemme know!!
Wylan’s soulmate talked to him a lot. Far too much, actually, given Wylan never responded.
He kind of hated the whole soulmate thing. The fact that he could get someone else’s thoughts essentially radioed to his own brain weirded him out, and the concept as a whole was just silly. Why would someone willingly send their thoughts to someone “fated” to them? It made no sense. How could someone be perfect for someone else? His father didn’t marry his soulmate the first or the second time. Most people didn’t. It was kind of pointless.
That didn’t stop Wylan’s soulmate, whoever they were.
The signals, as they were referred to, started when Wylan was eight. They were fuzzy, unclear, and didn’t happen very often. But by the time he was twelve, they were weekly, and by fifteen, it was like the person on the other end of the messages didn’t know how to shut up.
Do you prefer purple or green?
You’re very stubborn, soulmate.
Are you there? I know you are.
The signals sounded at random times, random hours, random days. Occasionally, Wylan would get a break. A week without hearing anything. A week of calm.
Secretly, though, the silence scared him more than the noise did.
It was one night when he was seventeen that Wylan finally spoke back to his soulmate. He’d always been too scared, too unsure. But in the depths of the dark, in his room with the moon high in the sky, his soulmate started messaging.
I don’t know if you’re real, soulmate. I’m starting to think you aren’t. Today was a bad day. Like, really bad. I…
The signals trailed off, leaving Wylan alone again. He gulped. Shifted in his bed. Shut his eyes and then opened them once more, waiting for something else.
I hope your day was better than mine. I really do.
Sighing, Wylan pulled his bottom lip between his teeth. This was a bad idea. A really bad idea.
He wasn’t even sure if it would work. He didn’t know how to do it.
‘Im sorry,’ he thought, pushing it out into the air. Anxious, he shut his eyes again.
