John Lewis,civil rights icon and U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th Congressional district, has died. Lewis had been suffering from Stage IV pancreatic cancer since December. He was 80. The son of Alabama sharecroppers, Lewis served in Congress for more than three decades, pushing the causes he championed as an original Freedom Rider challenging segregation, discrimination and injustice in the Deep South. He was an organizer of the March on Washington in 1963 along with Martin Luther King Jr., a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights movement. On March 7, 1965, he led Bloody Sunday, one of the most famous marches in American history. He led a vanguard of 600 people from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama demanding the voting rights for Black Americans. Lewis was a best selling author and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
