So RPG Maker 2003 on Steam

I really liked that they decided to put rpg maker 2003 on steam but I would like to make some points clear to any person new to the rpg maker community thinking of buying it. First of all this is an “obsolete” engine but it can do amazing things. This engine is way too powerful and way easier to learn than the actual VX Ace but depending on what you are planing to do you may want to save money to buy the newer versions. Now lets make a quick comparison with 2k3 the unofficial version ,XP and VX ACE(because who cares about VX these days)

2k3- The cheapest of all 3 ( $19,99 or R$36,99 yeah putting the Brazilian price too) no programing language knowledge required, side view battle as default( like FF6 and chrono trigger), all tiles for the map in one image, fixed sprite size, area system(works like tall grass in pokemon),movie support in wmv format

XP- just a little more expensive ($24,99 or R$44,99) has RGGS so it allows a lot of flexibility by scripting but that also requires programing language knowledge, sprite size is flexible, all tiles in one image but the size is flexible, no native faceset system(why?) or vehicle system but can be created using the scripting. No movie support(really why?)

VX ACE- the newest version($69,99 or R$119,99)  RGGS updated, flexible sprite size, tiles separated in categories and separate images(though it can be confusing at first). Movie support is back though only in ogv format, region system(its like the area system but can be used for other things),native character sprite creation and facesets, vehicle system is back.

So this is my opinion is if you love 2k3 and you use the unofficial version go buy it, if you are new want to make a game without having to learn any programming language buy it. But if you want to make a more “elaborated”(I mean with functions that are not native to the engine like overlay mapping) game Ruby scripting can make things faster for you. Good to remember that you don't need to use the RGGS you can just use the event system like 2k3 or at least is what they say in the manual. But really you will end up using it someway or another, but most of times you will just get a script already done and paste it. So unless you want to create your own script, you don't need to know ruby at all. Also I want to note that these are not all the differences between them I only listed the ones I found most important(I took all the info from the help files).

Also if there are new features to this official release it would be nice if they listed it somewhere. I looked on steam description and the official site and found nothing.

So yeah I have some mixed feelings about this some part of me says they could just give it for free but I understand they may had costs with the translation and all, but I don't know, doesn't make sense for me trying to sell a software from 2003 in 2015. Well I hope this help you guys to choose which version is the best for you.

Rpg Maker games worth playing part3

It has been a long time since my last post about rpg maker games(part 2). I haven't played them in a while since i got busy with college and my own game i am making (and bioshock infinite because that game is amazing). But i decided it was time for another post so here are some interesting games:

AliceMare-it's a great game with a great story and characters with tragic backgrounds.there isn't much to say without spoiling it so i will just say that it will make you try every ending.

Standstill Girl- if you like old school turn-based rpg get this game its really fun and even the grinding is creative and don't worry this is not a dragon quest level of grinding. 

Kin-a plataformer like game made on rpg maker the art is really good and the story although is really simple and easy to uncover is a good one.

Kirisame-i couln't stop playing this game really i was always anxious to see what would happen next.really didn't think it would be so good but be aware it has some disturbing things.

Shiro no noroi-Japanese and their kanji puzzles good enough the translator was kind enough to give hints to them. but i got stuck on some on the way. it has  3 endings and nice characters that depending on each ending you get will make you really sad(i got the bad one T.T need to play this again). And if you are able to pass the graveyard puzzle in you first try you are awesome.Also you may have to play this more than one time since getting the true ending is really tricky.

Seven mysteries- i have my doubts about recommending this one because i think the story is a incomplete in some way (even with the true ending i can't shake this felling).But even like this i liked the way all the characters are related and was fun to play

Grounded-ok i was not going to put this one on the list but after seeing the endings i decided to put it because i just didn't expect that.

not many games again because as i said i didn't play much(i played other rpg maker games too but i don't think they are good enough to be recommended).but i guess this is a good number already since most of them have multiple endings so have fun for now.

Ghost party- rpg maker critique

i was going to put this one on my last rpg maker games list but somehow i felt like i needed to say more about it. so now i will make an analysis about this game and of course will have some critiques but in no way i am trying to  badmouth it, if that was the case i wouldn't even waste my time writing.

Ghost party is a rpg maker game made by cicada team that  has a retro monochrome look. The story revolves around a haunted mansion, where you play as ghost who lives there, and a mysterious killer is attacking it's visitors one by one. Your objective is stop the killer before he kills everyone simple isn't it?

The gameplay is a classic adventure like,where you collect items and give them away to keep the story going which by the way has 2 or 3 endings if i remember correctly. Again simple and effective. Now about the game atmosphere, i really liked it. Although the game is a about a murderer on the loose it is funny yet make me stay on my toes because you never know who will die next or when.

The graphics where nice. the sprites showed the characters personality  quite well.the color palette was cool too the blue monochrome look gave it a nice touch and i think the game wouldn't be the same without it. 

So until now this is being a good game and really enjoyable (i played 2 or 3 times to see all the endings)It has a special aura about it that made me think about it the whole week after a finished it.I think it was its simple and funny story that made me fascinated about it(since i just can't create a simple to save my life). But as any game it has some problems and i will just point 2 of them that made me think "if it wasn't for this i would like this game a lot more".

First one, the music. it only has 3 tracks the whole game and if you get lost a lot like me it will get annoying really quickly . i mean the first time i played it took me 1~2 hours to finish and listening the same repetitive song almost made me go crazy. the second time i played without sound. i know how hard it is to make nice songs,but there are a lot of sources where you can get free music to use. I am sure that more extensive soundtrack would make this game even more enjoyable(something like a music change every time someone dies to a more dark tone would be really fitting) .

The second one is something that can only be described with "WHAT THE HELL I DO NOW?".It seems that after yume nikki came out people started thinking that not knowing where to go is a good style of gameplay(i am huge fan of yume nikki but even i know how frustating it can be) some describe this as a "exploration game" but it has limits.(I am not saying it was the developers intentions make a game like this, I don't even know if they know what yume nikki is. I am just making a parallel here) What do i mean is if anyone want to make a "exploration game" give some hints of what you need to do or where do you need to go. And this is one major problem in ghost party i think i only knew what I had to do with the items i got 2 or 3 times the whole game. The rest of the time i was like every time i got a new item i talked to everyone to see to who i had to give it.This make the game extend a lot more than it was needed.

This is not a exclusive problem i play a lot of games with this same problem(indies and AAA alike).I am not saying that is necessary to tell what to do every single step can be hints or even item descriptions that give you an idea of what to do. It is also valid having parts where you have no idea of what to do with an item and having to talk to everybody to know what to do if its plot related and not the whole game like this(unless you know how to do it well and not being too repetitive then i think it would be good).But i understand that when you are making a game its kind of hard noticing this. This is why beta testers that don't know anything about the game are always a nice addition.

Now to conclude this. I do recommend ghost party but i am also aware that not everyone will enjoy it but even with this problems i liked it and made me play twice so i would be lying if i said it wasn't fun and really i have been writing this for what? 2 hours now? for a game make me do this it has to leave a a great impression on me. This is not only for ghost party but to everyone who is making a game. I am not making this as just a player but as a game developer too knowing what were your mistakes make you learn even more than doing right from the beginning. It makes you want to make things better than you have done before. So i hope this was useful for those who had patience to read(and understandable since sometimes i am bad at expressing what i really wanted to say) all especially Cicada that are working on a new game and i am looking forward to play.

Gunnerkrigg Court is a science-fantasy webcomic created by Tom Siddell. It is updated online three days a week.

It's time for a new recommendation text post. First of all thanks rory for showing it to me.

Gunnerkrigg is a amazing story and charismatic characters. Unfortunately, i can't describe the story without spoiling it XD. So i just explain how this story works.

As a science-fantasy story, the author try to balance this 2 aspects so we have 2 protagonists Annie and Kat. Annie is more related to the fantasy aspect and Kat to the science one, both of them study at the court since it is some kind of school (it is a school but there is so much more going on there that i can't just say it is only a school) and the 2 become best friends very quickly. The plot show the conflict of science and fantasy that centers around the court and the forest.

The beginning center around introducing the characters which is fine for me, just warning because you will be in the dark at first so as a advice i say don't try to understand all at first just accept what is happening because the explanation will come to you eventually.

Now to the characters, they are awesome, you will love some of them, hate others, and some you will not know if you like them or not. All of them are unique and have their own problems to deal with (zimmy poor zimmy). the character development is really good too (for me Kat is the greatest example) when something is reveled it take a great impact in some characters and all of them try to cope with it in their own manner. 

All these things together made me read 1203 pages in 4 days XDDD so yeah it is a captivating story.And it is really worth reading so just click on the link and start reading \o.
