Ranja is the ex-military Captain of the USIF Atlas - even though she'd rather not be. In return for amnesty from her crimes as a member of the Earth military and for her voluntary surrenderrimg of sensitive Earthen information, she was provided a kushy job as the Captain of an exploratory vessel. She would much rather do just about anything than be put into another place of command, but its the only experience she has, so that's what she'll be doing for the next five years. Until then, she counts the days until she can legally quit
