I’ve recently developed a new special interest surrounding light houses and other maritime things! I’ve joined the U.S Light House Society’s passport club, where you can get stamps from hundreds of light housed in the U.S. I’m super excited about this because I haven’t had an intense special interest in a while so I’ll likely be posting more about it, especially since ill be going on a road trip to see a few light houses soon! I’m super happy flappy about it and may posts some gifs too!

We get asked about the rock jetty at just about every #HillsboroLighthouse tour. The lower part is from 1930. The previous several years, the #USLHS had built 6 wood/riprap jetties along the #Atlantic shore to help prevent erosion. These were more trouble than they were worth and were washed away in storms. District 6 Inspector Beck had wanted a granite block jetty instead, but was denied repeatedly, until he finally won out. #Onthisday in 1930 the “Schooner Georgette came to anchor off Station... Mr J.O. Webster commenced of unloading stone.” The upper portion wouldn’t come until the 1960’s, with the open “weir” in between purposely left as such to allow sand to collect. #Onthisday in 1910 the operating name changed from the United States Light House Establishment (USLHE) to the United States Light House Service (USLHS) Then on this day in 1939, President Roosevelt’s plan in the Reorganization Act went into effect. This ended the #USLHS and all US lighthouses went under the control of the #USCG, who didn’t want anything to do with them, but had no choice. This was also the starting day of two of the #HillsboroLighthouse OIC’s (Keepers), first Larry Jessie in 1992, and then David Lee Sparkenbaugh in 1997. Sparkenbaugh is sadly yet another keeper we know nothing about.
