Calling Joe Biden “one of America’s most consequential presidents” and “patriot of the highest order,” former US President Barack Obama has praised his fellow Democratic leader for opting out of 2024 presidential race in November.
In a statement, Obama said, “Joe Biden has been one of America’s most consequential presidents, as well as a dear friend and partner to me. Today, we’ve also been reminded — again — that he’s a patriot of the highest order.”
His statement came after Biden announced his decision to not seek re-election and endorsed US Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee for the Democratic party. Obama, however, did not make clear whether he would support Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
Recalling his decision to choose Biden as US Vice President, he stated, “Sixteen years ago, when I began my search for a vice president, I knew about Joe’s remarkable career in public service. But what I came to admire even more was his character — his deep empathy and hard-earned resilience; his fundamental decency and belief that everyone counts.”
He stressed that Biden has displayed that character again and again since taking office.
“He helped end the pandemic, created millions of jobs, lowered the cost of prescription drugs, passed the first major piece of gun safety legislation in 30 years, made the biggest investment to address climate change in history, and fought to ensure the rights of working people to organize for fair wages and benefits. Internationally, he restored America’s standing in the world, revitalised NATO, and mobilized the world to stand up against Russian aggression in Ukraine,” Obama said.

The shooting incident at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has drawn strong condemnation from several prominent leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama. Harris described the incident as “abhorrent” and said that such violence has no place in the US.
According to PTI, Shortly after the shooting, the US Vice President shared a post on X, saying, “I have been briefed on the shooting at former President Trump’s event in Pennsylvania. Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured.”
“We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting,” she said.
Harris also expressed gratitude to the US Secret Service for their swift response. “We are grateful to the United States Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities for their immediate action,” she said, adding that “violence such as this has no place in our nation.” “We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence,” the US Vice President said. The gunfire incident, which comes months before the 2024 US presidential elections, disrupted Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, as reported by CBS News. Trump was immediately escorted off stage by US Secret Service agents and taken away in a motorcade.In the videos that went viral on social media, Trump could be seen bleeding from his ear.
Former US President Barack Obama also condemned the incident, saying that there is “absolutely no place for political violence” in the US. “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics,” Obama shared in a post on X.
“Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery,” he added.
President Joe Biden responded shooting at the Trump rally, which killed at least one spectator and left the shooter dead as well.
“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety,” Biden wrote on X.
“There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it,” he further said.

United States President Joe Biden has admitted that he “almost fell asleep on stage” and “was not very smart” enough to handle his schedule before the first presidential debate with Donald Trump, blaming his extensive foreign travels for his disastrous performance.
According to PTI report, Biden, 81, seeking a second term in the White House, stumbled in his first televised presidential debate with his predecessor Trump, 78, on Thursday night last week, setting off alarm bells among top Democrats about whether the incumbent president can stay atop in the gruelling months ahead of the elections.
During their roughly 90-minute debate defined by personal attacks, Trump, the presumptive Republican Party candidate in the November 5 presidential election, clashed right from the start with Biden, arguing pointedly about the American economy, foreign relations and migration.
“I wasn’t very smart. I decided to travel around the world a couple of times…shortly before the debate,” Biden said while talking to donors at a fundraiser in a Virginia suburb of Washington DC.
“I didn’t listen to my staff…and then I almost fell asleep on stage,” he said, amidst pressure on Biden to quit the race for the White House due to his advancing age.
Biden admitted that he did not have a good debate, and apologised by saying that he was sorry for the performance.
“It’s not an excuse but an explanation,” he said.
The president’s remarks at the fundraiser lasted just six minutes, which is far shorter than what he speaks on such occasions.
