USS Orinoco skims the thick ammonia-laden atmosphere of Cappadocia’s 9th moon; Nix. 🖖🏽
USS Orinoco
Name: U.S.S. Orinoco
Registry: NCC-72905
Type: Danube-class Runabout
Year: 2373
Affiliation: Starfleet
Background: Replaces the runabout of the same name and registry assigned to DS9 and destroyed in 2372. The Orinoco was used by Kira Nerys, Chief O’Brien, Keiko O’Brien and Jake Sisko to travel to Maurer IV a jungle planet. Jake was going there for inspiration to write a novel. Once there they were captured by Maquis and surgically altered Romulans, Kira gave an emergency order to the runabout to transmit to DS9 a distress call. A warbird decloaked and destroyed the empty runabout mid-transmission, but the call still reached the station.
Appeared in DS9 #8, Marvel Comics. The Orinoco was destroyed in “Our Man Bashir”, a year before this story.
Name: U.S.S. Orinoco
Registry: NCC-72905
Type: Danube-class Runabout
Affiliation: Starfleet
Year: 2369-72
Background: Used by Keiko O’Brien for a class field trip (with Jake and Nog) to an uninhabited planet in the Gamma Quadrant, with Sisko and Dax piloting the ship. When they left that planet there was an inbalance in the warp drive that surged in the control consoles, knocking Dax and Sisko out. With life support failing and most system offline Jake and Keiko were able to locate a faint neutrino signature using a tricorder and return to the wormhole. Used in 2370 by Dax and Bashir to investigate the destruction of a Klingon warship by Cardassians in the Gamma Quadrant, along with a Klingon observer named Koleth. They followed the ship’s trail, from Keltara to Caldonia trying to piece the final days of the Klingon ship and found the wreckage in orbit of a planet in a sector of space called The Abyss, where no ship returned from. The readings were inconsistent with Cardassian weaponry. In 2371 Bashir, Dax and Ensign Jamie Kirk travelled to the Gamma Quadrant to search for a possible forward base site when they uncovered a strange artifact and returned to the station. Bashir was beamed off for emergency services prior to docking. The trio later re-used the Orinoco to do more detailed scans of the artifact, which had proven deadly, without endangering the station. However several Bajorans believing the artifact to be a Chalice of the Prophets had secreted themselves aboard, took control of the runabout and landed on the far side of Bajor.
Appeared in Star Trek: DS9 # 6, Hearts & Minds miniseries and Blood & Honor One-shot, Malibu Comics.
