#Throwback to 8 years ago where I was one of the lucky few who went onboard the $4.5 billion worth USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier where they filmed one of the Transformers 2 movie! It was definitely a #bucketlist moment, much thanks to my lecturer, Ms.Siow! 😊 Check out the short write up I did for the school paper about my visit. ••• American aircraft carrier in town By Lung Kye Lin Taylor’s University School of Communication student PORT KLANG: American aircraft carrier, USS John C. Stennis, also referred as CVN-74, arrived at the Port Klang Cruise Centre on Sept 4 for a scheduled port call. “We plan to visit some schools and children homes and also to collaborate with the Kuala Lumpur government to do some community work,” said Commanding Officer of the ship, Captain Ronald Reis. “We have a very good relationship with the Malaysian marines and these activities will help to strengthen it,” said Commander of Strike Group Three, Rear Admiral Craig Faller. “We are very excited to be in Malaysia for the first time. The soldiers are very excited to visit the Petronas Towers and the city centre,” he added. The nuclear-powered, multi-purpose aircraft carrier has four aircraft elevators, four catapults and a four-and-a half acres flight deck area. The ship was commissioned on Dec 9, 1995 and its last port call in Malaysia was in 2004. According to the ship’s public affairs officer, Cindy Fields, scenes from the Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen movie were filmed on the vessel. “We were about to deploy the jets while they were shooting and a lot of planning had to be done to avoid any accidents,” she said, adding that they were also the first aircraft carrier to have a Starbucks café on board but it was called Java John’s instead. About 15 to 17 per cent of the 5,000 ship’s crew consists of women and they are involved in every task on the ship except the Special Warfare by the US Navy Seals.
