Was a little sad today when I saw the news that the USS Kitty Hawk has begun it’s journey towards dismantling 😞. This was the first carrier I had the opportunity to visit almost 25 yrs ago . Here’s a few pics from the day (yes, they’re not great but I was young and using a camera with a film… remember when you didn’t know what you got until they were developed ? USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) A Legacy of Service

The USS Kitty Hawk was an imposing aircraft carrier in the United States Navy, serving from 1961 until her decommissioning in 2009. Named after Kitty Hawk, NC - the site of the Wright brothers' first powered flight, she was the last conventionally powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. fleet.

Length: 1,046.5 feet (319 meters) Displacement: Approximately 82,200 tons Crew: About 2,900 sailors and 2,480 air wing personnel Aircraft Capacity: Between 70 and 85 aircraft, including F/A 18 Super Hornets, EA 6B Prowlers, E 2C Hawkeyes, SH 60 helicopters, and C 2A Greyhounds.

In 1967, Kitty Hawk became the first aircraft carrier to receive the Presidential Unit Citation for exceptional service during the Vietnam War. She took part in various operations, including Operation Restore Hope off the coast of Somalia and airstrikes in response to Iraqi violations of United Nations sanctions. The ship was brought to the port of Yokosuka in 1998, Japan, where she stayed until her final departure in 2008. Despite efforts by the USS Kitty Hawk Veterans Association to preserve her as a museum, the Navy decided to decommission and scrap the ship. In October 2021, USS Kitty Hawk was sold for one cent to International Shipbreaking and arrived in Brownsville, Texas, in May 2022 for dismantling. USS Kitty Hawk served with distinction, but many of the sailors were exposed to asbestos. Veterans who served aboard the Kitty Hawk may be at risk for asbestos-related illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. These conditions have long latency periods, with symptoms appearing many years after exposure. Navy veterans experiencing symptoms should consult a pulmonologist. Early detection and treatment can make a significant difference
