Evaluating the rally... base route and bonus locations.
Just as last year, the very useful ‘analog’ portion of our route planning strategy came courtesy of Ken Morton’s 2006 Utah 1088 Ride Report.

Evaluating the rally... base route and bonus locations.
Just as last year, the very useful ‘analog’ portion of our route planning strategy came courtesy of Ken Morton’s 2006 Utah 1088 Ride Report.
The first bonus location of the rally on Saturday was putting three 9mm rounds through a piece of paper. Here is Lisa representing our team. I won’t say how she did, but it Is rumored that many targets were safe that day!
Sunday Riders Banquet
Sunday PM. Today was the riders banquet. We were awarded "The Winner" in the Couples Class for the 12-hour rally, with the second place couple only one bonus location worth of points behind us. Our high score was effectively tied with three of the "Single Class" riders (but one rider was not running a SPOT tracker, therefore leaving 5000 points on the table), so there ended up being a tie between two riders for first in the Single Riders Class.
There were lots of great discussions and reflections from riders of all three rallies; the 3-day, the 24-hour, and the 12-hour. If none of the other riders beat me to it, I'll try and post a more detailed report of the 12-hour rally in a bit , but I can sum up for now by saying it was well appreciated by all to have experienced such fine roads and scenery, which for the most part were at higher altitudes, cleaner air, and lower temperatures than Salt Lake City. We have to hand it to Steve Chalmers for another year with an outstanding base route and interesting goodies to chase after.
Sunday AM. You may notice what looks like some glitches in the track where it zigs backwards a few times. That is actually accurate. In this rally we backtracked on several occasions to build up some higher average speed miles (which I will hopefully elaborate more on later).
Friday Riders Meeting
Friday PM. In just a few minutes we’ll have our riders meeting where we will be briefed on the particulars of tomorrow’s rally. There is a big wild fire nearby, but we are more likely to be affected by incidents further away. If they hand out the rally packets tonight we will be busy with that immediately after the meeting planning our route. If the packets are to be presented on the morning than we will be hitting the sack fairly early in anticipation of having to digest a lot of information in a short period of time.
Friday Morning Pre-ODO Check
Friday AM. Well you might see from the tracks that we arrived at Rally Headquarters in good time yesterday, taking a slight detour for a more scenic route in the final hours.
The motorcycle is standing on its own two feet now and should see a little action this afternoon at the odometer check. We’ll have to take her on a measured 20 mile route so a correction factor can be calculated for us. When we finish the rally that will be used to determine our “actual” mileage.
The above link will take you to the blog we set-up for last year's rally and ride home. We looped back home via Moab, Mesa Verde, and Canyon de Chelly.
