Teru and Hanako
Some people hate the way Teru treats Hanako and other supernaturals but I don't think people see that Teru and Hanako are important for each other's character development.
Yes Hanako is scared shitless of Teru and Teru hates him and wants him gone but they actually have changed because of each other.
In the beginning,Teru sees Hanako as a violent, selfish and unstable supernatural who's a threat and should be disposed of.
Not feeling any sympathy for him even after Hanako tells him that he still has things to do and wants to atone for his sin.
But in the new timeline, where Hanako grows up and becomes a teacher,Nene wonders if the timeline should just stay the same but Teru doesn't agree.
Kou confirms this later too that Hanako in this timeline could never be happy.
Of course,Teru hates Hanako with all of his being but now he has empathy and sympathy, understanding that just because Amane got to be an adult in this timeline doesn't mean he's happy. He couldn't.
Who would be happy when their loved ones are gone? (Tsukasa in this case for grown up Amane.)
This panel is important because it's the person who hates Hanako the most and refuses to feel sympathy that realizes this.
Another thing is,Teru has become more empathetic because of Kou and Nene.
Hanako has made Kou realise that not all supernaturals are malicious and starts seeing the good in them as well.
Nene has also grown to love Hanako.
Kou and Nene's acceptance for supernaturals due to Hanako also influenced Teru.
Teru in the beginning have never trusted Hanako and only didn't kill him because of Kou.
But now,he's begrudgingly accepting their friendship as long as Kou is safe and happy.
And also...
Isn't it interesting that because of Teru fighting Hanako and about to exorcise him, which led to Teru and Kou arguing, and having conflict and letting out all their unbottled feelings.
Eventually,Teru and Kou make up and they have a heart to heart talk.
With Teru even giving Kou the choice to become an exorcist and trusting him.
This wouldn't have happened if Teru didn't go after Hanako.
Now let's talk about how Teru changed Hanako for the better!!!
Hanako doesn't seem a problem with sacrificing Aoi to make Nene's lifespan longer as he is already a murderer and doesn't see anything wrong with it.
And yeah, surface level it looks like Teru is being unnecessarily cruel.
But this is actually needed.
Hanako is only focused on saving Nene that he doesn't consider the consequences, that Nene might get hurt.
This is necessary because Hanako realizes what he's done is wrong, not only will it give Nene lots of emotional pain, but it will give others emotional pain and possible resentment towards Nene which might get Nene hurt.
Notice how Hanako never does anything drastic after Severance ended?
He's cherishing all the time he has left with Nene, determined to make her happy and it's very sweet.
Teru and Hanako are extremely important for each other's character development, hate it or not, they have changed for the better.
The hate and fear in their dynamic is real but everything they went through was needed.
Teru to have more empathy, tolerance towards supernaturals.
Hanako to be more aware of the consequences of his actions and cherishing life.
I won't lie, both Teru and Hanako are selfish characters, who put their loved ones through emotional distress with their misguided way of protecting them.
Both pics apply to them, choosing to do the dirty work because they don't want to put their loved ones through that.
But they both have come a long way.
It's fine if you don't like one of them, but just know they have impacted each other and made the other change for the better!
Also I find it funny af when Teru terrorizes him.
Oki bye!!!!
