The man couldn’t have been much taller than Attic, but the way he carried himself made him seem seven feet tall. He was all dark—slicked black hair, brown weathered skin, covered head-to-toe in a jet-black suit. He looked like a mob boss, or maybe someone’s personal bodyguard. Attic immediately felt the urge to hide.
“Charlotte,” the man said. Mama’s name sank between them like a lead weight. “It’s been too long.”
