Hi! First of all, thank you so much 😭😭 your so sweet. That's genuinely the BEST compliment I've ever received of my fics 💗 I'm really scared of not getting him as the actual character and not the fanon. Damian canon vs Damian fanon are similar but definitely not the same. I've been reading and analysing Dami a lot so you saying that makes me so happy :) my efforts are paying off, yay! Even so, I think I still have a long way to go before I can depict Damian correctly in my fanfics. I plead guilty to not characterizing him well for the sake of the fic's plot lmaoo but I promise I'll get better. I'm also really grateful that people ask me for tips 😭 like, me? So. I have a bunch of writing tips (like, a lot) and I don't want to make this too long, so I'll just put some, but if you want I can make a separate post for more :) also, in some months I'm going to start studying literature so I'll have even more tips to give, so maybe it can become a series of tips lmao idk
How To Write Damian?:
1. Damian's Characterization
Damian is not the same he was at 10 years old. In canon he's 14-15, but I normally depict him to be 16-17.
- He doesn't talk like an 30 year old 19th century aristocrat. He's clipped, formal and has an extensive vocabulary, but he doesn't overdo it. And he says curse words too.
- He has emotions. He blushes, he gets angry and flustered, and hurt and jealous. He doesn't keep a everyday scowl anymore, not even a poker face. He's put together and calculated but not cold.
- He's really observant and knows how to read people extremely well. He's also easy to read, but pretends he's not.
- Damian hides a lot of softness. Even if people (I'm guilty too tbf) depict him as a lonely wolf, he actually has a lot of friends, loves his family and obviously, animals.
- He IS kind. He wouldn't hurt anyone willingly unless it's necessary, not reader and not for reader. When he gets into fights FOR reader it's because of protection, not because "he'll kill for you" (no hate to yandere AU's tho), canon Damian after his character development wouldn't kill for you, he would search ways to protect you (if he fails that.. well that's a different story). He literally went to a whole journey and character development to understand that all life's matter, even after being raised the opposite. He CHOOSES to save, to be kind, to improve every day and try to be a better person. He would not revert to his previous actions unless the situation was very specific. He is actually very selfless when it comes to people he loves and is not scared to self-sacrifice.
- His love language is acts of service and (hear me out) physical touch. He was raised like he was raised, don't tell me he isn't touched starved. We literally see him getting hugged a lot, probably the most hugged kid character in whole DC comics. Don't confuse him taking time to trust you and letting you touch him with him hating physical contact.
- He has hobbies. He loves art, and shoujo manga, AND SOCCER (kind of unexpected yes). He doesn't just spends his time training, my boy is a teenager, let him enjoy the things he likes. He also takes interest in playing multiple instruments, acting, reading and poetry.
- He in fact uses his phone. Like there are a LOT of panels of him using his phone, but he's not an iPad kid. I never understood where this "Damian hates social media" thing comes from, since he is depicted in canon as someone who keeps up with the things people say about the Batfam in social media.
2. Emotional Vulnerability
His whole character arc in canon is learning how to be a normal child/teen. This man is NAWT a rock, is he a little emotional constipated? Yeah. But he still feels.
- Emotional confessions happen after he gains trust in reader. People often make themselves vulnerable to create a connection; he does it later, after the connection is settled.
- He confesses things as if it were a struggle. He doesn't just say it; he thinks about it, rephrases it, regrets it, and ends up saying it because he knows he won't have the courage later.
- Physical touch often precedes emotional vulnerability. He tastes the waters to make sure he's not crossing boundaries.
- Damian is a poet, you cannot convince me otherwise. He has a way with words that not a lot of people have, much less at his age. I personally headcanon that he writes letters but never sends them lmao (I wanna write something about that). His confessions (not just romantic ones) are not just words, they are emotion, they are everything he hasn't said and has bottled up finally exploding into beautiful words.
- Also, his reputation precedes him unfortunately. People still think he's the same person he was at 10. He pretends to not be hurt by that (he is). He doesn't try to prove them wrong, he just keeps growing as a person and let people think whatever.
- He struggles with insecurity (this ties directly with the point above).
3. The Batfamily Dynamic
Chaotic, loving, unhinged. They tease mercilessly but would do anything for each other, they do have a lot of issues but they are capable of working them out.. or ignoring them lol.
- THE GIRLS. Why are we forgetting that a lot of his character development was prompted by the women in his life? Not only by Dick, or Pennyworth, or his father or his other brothers. Steph, Cass, my girl Maya, NIKA, hell even Thalia gets overlooked. Add them to his story, or at least acknowledge them. (I'm guilty of not doing it yet but in my defense, I in fact do write them, I just haven't published those fics)
- Everyone tease Damian about his relationship with reader but supports it. They treat reader like family before reader feels like they belong in the family
- Bruce is not as emotionally constipated with Damian as people make it to be. He's not a horrible father (let's pretend his own writers do understand his character), he's a deeply wounded man that's trying to raise multiple wounded children (or not so children anymore). Either way, Damian would not be scared of Bruce, he respects him, he doesn't fear him.
Writing Tips:
1. Show, then tell: Start with vivid sensory detail (sight, sound, smell), then layer in meaning.
2. Rhythmic sentences: Mix short punchy lines with long flowing ones. Short = tension. Long = immersion.
3. Specificity over abstraction: Not "a sad room" but "a room with three dead houseplants and a coffee mug ringed like tree trunks."
4. Subtext in dialogue: What's unsaid matters more. Characters talk around their feelings.
5. Importance: Every detail should serve character, mood, or plot. If it doesn't, cut it.
The way I write is really specific (lmao).
I make a map of the scenes, then a summary of the scene, and then extend it and write more until the scene it's completed.
Example:
1. Pool scene. Damian and reader almost kiss.
2. Pool scene. Reader wants to kiss Damian. They're both extremely close, reader is holding him by the wrist. Reader and Damian stare at each others lips. They almost kiss, but the moment is interrupted.
3. You lower your gaze to his mouth, wanting to bring your lips together, but you shut those intrusive thoughts. The water moves around you gently when he comes impossibly closer and you caress his wrist with your thumb. You can feel Damian's hot breath again your lips, and for a moment you think he's actually going to kiss you. You look at his eyes, pools of green now half-lidded, staring at your lips. You tilt your head subtly, slowly closing your eyes. Your breaths mingle, your lips graze, and for a second you almost think your lips are going to touch—
4. You catch him as he slowly lowers his gaze to your mouth, and you suddenly feel an urge to grab the back of his neck and bring your lips together, but you shut down those intrusive thoughts. The water around him ripples gently as he slowly moves to you, and you hesitantly caress his wrist with your thumb. You let out a trembling sigh, still staring at his lips. Damian has come so close that now your chest is touching his, you feel his hot breath mingling with yours and for a moment, you really think he's going to kiss you. Your gaze drifts to his eyes, those deep green eyes are now half-lidded, staring at your lips, as if he were calculating something. You tilt your head slowly and subtly, beginning to close your eyes, already feeling how his lips brush against yours almost imperceptibly, almost feeling like the inevitable is going to happen—
And that's it. Lol.

By the way, this does not mean that the depictions of Damian in other fanfics are wrong! It's just how I rather write him, and it's just how he is written in canon. Damian's behavior in fics can vary depending on his age and how mature he is. But that doesn't mean his self in other fics are not valid, or that y'all shouldn't enjoy them. The way writers write characters in fics shouldn't affect the way you see those characters in canon!
