Thomas Bringing Lord Stanley to Burlington
The 2011 Vezina Trophy and Conn Smythe winner Tim Thomas announced that he will be bringing the cup to his alma mater, the University of Vermont, on September 3.
The public viewing is expected to take place in the morning and news of the venue have not been confirmed yet. The Cup is making its first public appearance in the state since September 2010, when former UV strength and conditioning coach Paul Goodman, who has worked with the Chicago Blackhawks since 2008, brought the trophy to the opening of the Catamount Store on Church Street in Burlington. Thomas played for UVM from 1993-97 and led the Catamounts to the program’s first appearance in the Frozen Four in 1996.
His road to fame began in his hometown of Davidson, MI, just outside of Flint. However, Thomas had a difficult time in choosing his new program. "I wasn't recruited at all out of high school," he said. "After my first year of juniors, I hadn't been recruited by anybody. I went to an Olympic festival; had a very good one, and that's when I started to get recruited by UMass Lowell and Michigan Tech. But they both had returning seniors that were All-Americans. In August I picked Michigan Tech in my home state, but I hadn't signed any paperwork." He then goes on to say that Vermont had lost their starter to the NHL draft. Thomas' coach at the olympic festival had talked to former Vermont head coach Mike Gilligan to see if he would be able to play. "He told UVM about me and the first question I asked (head coach) Mike Gilligan was, 'If I come, will I get a chance to play right away?' They said, 'You'll have a chance to play every game.'"
In his career at UVM, Thomas had a record of 81–43–15 record, a 2.70 GAA and .924 save percentage. He also ranks first all time amongst Vermont goalies in games played (140), wins (81) and saves (3,950). Not too bad of a career, right?
