We'd love to invite you to join the Buffer journey, Mike! :)
I don’t think I’ve ever waited in so much anticipation of an email.
I couldn’t sleep at all; my phone would *ding* in the middle of the night and I would roll over, reach across my pillow, put in my passcode and squint at the fluorescent screen, all jittery and hopeful.
And then it came! The offer to join Buffer!
I’ve been a huge fan of Buffer for awhile. I would point to them when discussing brands that I admire for placing people over profit, and culture above strategy. They are my flag-bearers for truth and transparency.
So, I applied for their open Customer Development position.
Despite limited experience doing customer development (in the strictest sense), applying for this role made sense for a few reasons.
- I’ve always been interested challenging assumptions.
- I’ve always liked hearing others’ stories.
- I’ve always believed in customer-driven decision making.
Prior to the offer I had three interviews, although calling them interviews feels like a disservice. Throughout each I was carefully listened to, encouraged to share my personal story and beliefs and offered some amazing words of wisdom. The final interview with Leo (one of Buffer’s co-founders and someone I have admired for some time) was more like a therapy session than an interview!
I’m now in my first week of ‘bootcamp’, a six week trial period, and I can say it is an absolute privilege to be welcomed into such a progressive and positive organization. I had a hunch Buffer would hold true to its values, but I’ve been blown away by everyone who I have briefly spoken to so far.
This also means I’ll be learning A LOT about customer development and UX over the coming weeks, so that will likely be the focus of this blog.
Wish me luck!
