Ooh, the attitude was a surprise. Toph’s milky eyes were bright with mirth as she chuckled.
“ Spirits, yes. You have no idea.” She gestured over her shoulder as she spoke.
“That girl took her sweet time getting out when she was born, and hasn’t made a solid decision since. Except maybe marrying that egghead husband of hers.”

“ No.”
Her answer was quick.
Sure, raising her kids would have probably been easier if she’d had a dedicated partner to share the burden. And she could see the benefits of such an arrangement in the relationships of her friends. Frankly, she’d had her share of opportunities to settle down and never wanted for suitors.
But in the end it always came back to the same thing: Toph knew what she wanted. And that wasn’t it.

Toph waved a dismissive hand and snorted at the younger woman’s words.
“ You forget that on the floor is where I’m in my element. ” With that, she made herself comfortable and draped her arms behind her head, as if she were reclining in a plush mattress instead of the cold, heard ground.

After Aang and Sokka died, Toph made figurines of them because she was scared of forgetting what they looked like. If she outlives Katara and Zuko, she'll do the same for them.

The elderly woman stopped picking her toes long enough to turn her head in the visitor's direction. It had been some time since they were last together, but for Toph there was no mistaking the unique feel of the Avatar.
