This would be the first time he waled past his desk to go to work. He had been briefed on what to expect. Not all tasks would be heroic, he had already done the Dispatching, he knew the drill just as good as anyone else.
"It's just one keyboard for an other..."
He tells himself, feels odd showing up in uniform just to get suited up again now that he was here but, there was no way he could fit the new Mech in his apartment.
“You didn’t have to be so reckless just to prove a fucking point.”
"I'm not being reckless!"
Locker door slams closed, where there was once empty space was now a rightfully concerned, and understandably pissed off Visi. He would love to stand there and get reprimanded by his coworker, Royd was going to need an extra set of hands working on the suit.
"I was limit testing that's what you do with equipment"
never mind that typically someone was not in the equipment that was being limit tested, and that was also done in a controlled setting, not during an android uprising...
Mech suit is knelt down, cockpit open bathing the street in blue light. With his back to the Mech's shin, Robert has propped himself upright. The blood that had been blinding him finally coagulated over his brow and was no longer dripping down into his vision.
While he isn't aware of any professional medical training, Raven is the best he has on scene. Gentle as her touch can be, he was receiving none of it right now.
"That's not necessar-"
The damp cloth is "accidently" brushed across his mouth, silencing any further protests. He knows that look, knit brows and narrowed ruby eyes that stare through him.
She's thinking about something.
Probably not interested in much he has to say, or maybe there's something else on her mind. Hard to say considering his job shift has left him with less time to converse with coworkers than his Dispatching position had.
@straysupe asks:
you think we can just carry on without you?
"I don't think you have a choice"
That sounded a little more foreshadowing than it was meant too, but recently he had made the choice to shift from Dispatcher back to Hero now that Royd had the suit up and running.
"I've been doing this for a long time now, I know this gig is dangerous, and I am not going to let you guys shoulder the risk alone anymore".
Which was a pretty bold statement to make while said mech was being loaded up into multiple vehicles, completely taken apart in the last mission. He cradles an arm over a rib he suspects is bruised, if not cracked.
It was getting harder to admit the monotonous jobs weren't getting to him, showing up for press releases, breaking up bar fights, settling debates? finding out where someone parked their car?? But getting back in the suit was liberating in it's own way.
So was keeping a closer eye on the team. He's noticed the nerves dying down a little. And if he was honest, the mech's seat was waaay more comfortable than the desk... one pain traded for an other it seems.
It's been months since Shroud was in prison, the damage done to the HQ in Torrance had been mostly repaired, by all means things should be good. And Yet Robert doesn't act that way. He's been on edge, like the stress from the job has been hitting him different, and it has. He isn't Dispatching like he should be. For most his life he has only had to concern himself with one person's safety beyond the civilians he's sworn to protect. That circle has grown exponentially and , frankly speaking he doesn't know how to handle that.
He should be able to take some comfort that he can still cover the teams ass on calls but it isn't enough. The Desk has felt more like a ball and chain. Comms have died too many times, and he has blown his temper when heroics are displayed that could have resulted in someone being hurt. He isn't handling the job well, he should talk to someone... not casually, but professionally.
instead, he goes home one night, draws up a letter. He can't be behind the desk, not until he sorts himself out. Mandy would give him time off, but that's not what he needs right now. Has to take this up the chain of command. Going over Blazer's head is not a great idea but he reasons that she has enough on her plate and as his thoughts convinced him before, she'd just give him some PTO.
He does take some time off, phone calls needed to be made after all, but ultimately he found someone who agreed with him, someone who thought some good PR would be to put Mecha man back on the streets for a time. No one wanted to take the shitty jobs? well, wasn't his choice anymore. That, and being on the same Roster as the Z-team, he would more than likely end up doing them himself.
Monday was going to be crazy.

Post Dispatch, Robert gives up Dispatching to work the job of a Hero for hire as he tries to work through the fear of loss now that he has something in his life that he can lose.
