The crickets sang as the embers in the campfire glowed. Ki lay on her bed roll, staring at the stars with her arms crossed. Frustrated tears pricked her eyes as Master Allegra slept beside her on her own bed roll, breathing in rhythm.
Their fights were becoming more common. Ki was tired of Allegra constantly chirping about the Jedi code. She knew it by heart now, and the tenet about attachment struck a nerve. Ki snapped, and Allegra barked back. They had argued, and Allegra blurted that Ki was a terrible padawan. That had shut her up rather quickly.
And so, as Allegra angrily flopped onto her bed roll, Ki silently cried into hers. She didn’t mean to be a bad student. She just had a hard time fitting into the Jedi mold.
Ugh, this was so embarrassing.
Ki pressed the base of her palms into her eyes. They were supposed to be on a mission to track down a stolen Jedi relic, not to hash out a domestic squabble.
She sighed. Then she paused.
A small buzz in her ear caught her attention. Something was calling to her through the force.
Silently, Ki rolled off her mat and sprung to her feet. She grabbed her pack. Whatever was calling her was becoming more persistent. Maybe it was the relic, and Allegra would see how devoted Ki actually was to her studies if she returned with it single handedly.
The padawan snuck away and disappeared into the night.
