lay low. it was one rule to the game right now. because the game was running fast off a track that he knew that they had to stay put on. lay low and then proceed. simple. and he could do simple. lay low and watch the place. instruction stuck on repeat in his head. because they were only get one shot at this. and they were already catching fire way across the states. California was a safer bet. they never played safe. but like hell they were gonna end up in the clink doing 15 to 20. wasted time. and he didn’t like the idea of wasted time. not one bit. by now coming in here was routine. something he did every time he got a chance. not much of a chance. California was off the map some for him mostly. but here he was. golden state saluted, sitting at the table in the back. he asked the girl at the counter for his usual. which wouldn’t have meant a burger. she didn’t recognize him. but he had asked for Delaney by name now and she gave him a confused look and told him he’d have to wait a moment. wait. he could wait for familiar faces in strange places. laying low was boring as hell. he sat back in the seat and watched the people pass by. a couple of them turning in for a quick bite to eat. it was late, the rush was slow. he was counting on slow business. the world seemed to move in slow motion when your hands were tied. but they had brushed too close last time. lay low, Richie had said. maybe he’d ask her what time her shift ended.

the time wasn’t done. not by a long shot. didn’t feel done. still seemed like it was all stuck up in his head somehow. but fresh air was nice. feet on free ground was nice. this was new shit for him right about now. but he wasn’t gonna waste a load of time enjoying it. he was gonna see Richie. words were flying hot out in the air. that Rich had gone and lost his head some place back here. the two of them were only good together. something about long nights in prisons, something about gray cells and cold bars, getting his ass kicked in the yard, and the slop on his tray every day, the stale empty that he lived in reminded him constantly of that.
he moved into the place and it was empty. ‘least it felt empty. like everything had been sucked right outta it. he moved in and set his bag down. straight from here. he hadn’t wanted to see anyone else. long bus ride. and here he was. not where Richie should be. but where he should be. with his brother.
‘hey, Rich, you better not have died on me. what kinda welcome home would that be?”
