It was unlike anything Connor had ever experienced. It was like something out of the past, like some otherworldly beginning-of-earth kind of past. That, or it was something from the distant future, after the fall of man, when everything was turning to dust and ruin. He could almost believe it was both and neither at the same time.
All he knew was that this was not where he’d predicted the anomaly would lead. When he’d fallen in by accident he thought he’d see little Rexes flying around, and he half expected to be able to find the spot where his first ever anomaly had opened. Not... whatever this was. Where was he?
The anomaly had closed as soon as he had gotten here, and these thoughts flashed through his head for a millisecond; he barely had any time to take in his surroundings before the panic set in. It was like last time all over again, only this time there was no Abby, and no purpose for being there in the first place. But like before, there was no telling how long he would be trapped, or if he would even ever leave at all.
He wanted to scream “Help!” but his voice caught in his throat, almost like a frog that wanted escape but couldn’t find it, and all he could do was turn on the spot in confusion and terror, looking for any sign of life at all. But it was empty as far as he could see. And the bone-chilling quiet, save for the sounds of his frantic feet kicking up dirt, was maddening.
