There’s an instinctual part of him that wants to respond in the same snarky way he would if they were back in Brooklyn. ‘What are you, my mother?’ with a huff, tie it all together with a roll of his eyes to really send the message home. And then he’d ruffle Steve's hair just to watch him get annoyed and fix it. Though, realistically, if they were back in Brooklyn then Bucky wouldn’t be anywhere by himself, because he’d be too busy plastered to Steve’s side, one of them dragging the other into trouble.
Things have changed, and there’s evidence of it all around them. It’s in the lingering smell of gunpowder in the air, the hilt of a knife digging into his ankle from where it’s tucked in his boot, the bulky, muddy hood of the jeep he’s sitting on.
Oh, and the fact that he has to look up at Steve now when they walk side by side, that’s a hell of a change.
The mission was successful, it was over, they fought the bad guys and did their damn duty. He can still feel his ears ringing from the explosion after they blew up the HYDRA base. He should be used to it by now, but he’s pretty sure he’s gained some permanent damage to his ear drums in this damn war.
“Why?” He absentmindedly flicks a small rock off the jeep, watching it go flying away. He doesn’t look at Steve, just stares in the direction the rock skipped off to. “There a threat?”
