veronika volodarskya: back from atlanta > meeting evelyn parker > dealing with maelstrom > first night at the afterlife > immediately after konpeki > first day of the last months of her life
veronika is fluent in russian and english, and knows a bit of yiddish and hebrew alongside those - though she’s fallen out of practice in both of the latter ones since the deaths of her grandmother and mother. she mostly keeps biz in English.
veronika did a bunch of jobs, trying to keep on the straight and narrow while her mother was alive. she danced at lizzie’s, even bartended sometimes when they needed it. there was a stint as the front desk girl at a motel. none was ever enough to scrape together more than one treatment for her mom, let alone enough to get better healthcare. she did start skimming, here and there. lifting a few eddies from cash registers or picking sockets on her commute. she was spending a night in jail when her mother eventually lapsed into the coma that killed her. after the funeral, she booked it to atlanta as quickly as possible and gave up on any ideas of a life lived honestly. no point in it, anyway.
veronika is very much a family girl. or she was, when she had one. her father had affiliations with the scavs before she was born, likely working as a ripperdoc (doing more ripping than doccing) and trying to get out. he met her mother, a friend of misty’s mother’s, at a bar where she was dancing and when she fell pregnant he wanted to get out even more. the opportunity came in the form of padre, who ended up needing intensive medical care stat in scav territory. he helped, for the price of getting him out of the scavs. her mother continued dancing on and off throughout her childhood before eventually opening a food stand heywood. her father died when she was twelve - his past caught up to him, is what her grandmother would say. her grandmother died when she was fifteen of old age, a blessing. it was just she and her mother until she was twenty-five, when her mother passed away after a long illness. she hopped the next train to atlanta before the ashes were cold after that.
the thing about pre-game veronika is that she tried so hard not to be a merc, actually. if there’s a job in night city, she’s done it: waitressing, scop stands, private security, pole dancing, working register at any number of convenience, clothing, or grocery stores, motel concierge, mechanic, etc. her mom and grandma were the main reason. her mother worried constantly, babushka would have been disappointed, et cetera.
it’s just that no matter how hard she gave the straight and narrow a shot . . . something happened.
she’d end up short on the rent, or the payment plan for her mom’s meds, or her dad would get into some kind of gambling debt again. she’d need cash on the fly. and growing up in heywood, you get to know who’s hiring. a little drug delivery here, maybe boosting a car for a chop shop there, skimming eds out of the register over there. when her mom died, she gave it one last shot. move to atlanta, stay straight.
that didn’t really work out.
build thoughts:
vi: speedy, sleek, netrunner with a throwing knife or katana for up close combat, pistol if it has to get a bit messy.
veronika: run and gun. kisses the barrel of her pistol before she blows you away. loadout includes assault rifle, smg, and a pistol.
virge: melee, got a big ole bat and loves to swing it and when that doesn’t work she’ll pull out the literal big guns. shotgun and revolvers for emergencies.
❝ whaddaya want? ❞ she's gotten good at this trick. on the outside, veronika's lips don't even move an inch. she stands there, in a cheap top and cheaper shoes, eyes roving over the menu of the scop-stand with only slight interest. on the inside, though? it's for johnny, a little play at courtesy. the street vendor gives her a furtive glance, and v half-smiles. aloud: ❝ still deciding. ❞
@rockerb0y liked for a starter, from veronika.
veronika is a decent cook. sure, it’s not like she’s always had the freshest ingredients on hand, but some of her earliest memories are standing shoulder to shoulder with her mother or her father or her grandmother. they’d hand her some package to unwrap or vegetable to cut up, when they had them. they’d show her how to make this thing just a bit more flavorful, or combine this and this to make that, et cetera.
when she lived with jackie and his mother, she picked up some recipes from mama welles and folded them into her repertoire. of course, when since she moved out and since konpeki, she’s subsisted on not-so-great takeout and plastic laced pizza. sort of a side effect of an incoming death malaise, maybe.
cooking with river, for a family? that’s nice. it gets her cooking again, too.
