because of the very nature of their existence—machines built for a singular purpose: WAR—exos have developed their own coded language. whether this was an unintentional byproduct of the seeding of the deep stone crypt subroutine or a more direct form of malicious compliance with clovis bray is unknown. the fact that it is universal among exos, including those risen by the traveler as guardians, points towards the former, though there is some evidence that its use is likely a mixture of the two.
this language is impossible to replicate with anatomy that is not exo ( though it is important to note that rasputin and his subminds are able to communicate with this language as well, considering their past command of exo ) as the sounds are utterly inorganic. to human, awoken, cabal and eliksni ears, it sounds similar to radio static whose pitch shifts and changes on a dime. it is a harsh and uncomfortable language to listen to, particularly for extended periods of time, often making use of frequencies beyond human perception. it is unclear what exo-speak sounds like to the vex, the hive and the taken, as they do not follow similar biological designs.
to exo ‘ears’ the language sounds more complex than radio static. they are highly attuned to the key notes that are a part of the noise. think of an old television set whose antennae have been knocked off axis showing a screen filled with snow and the occasional highly warped image. while others are able to discern that something is meant to be shown, exos can decipher the picture instantaneously from the snow. in a similar way, others can discern that exo-speak is a language and not merely static, though it remains completely unintelligible.Â
this language is closed and impossible to teach to outsiders that lack the vocal structures to produce it and analysis routines to decode and recode it, though many have tried deciphering it. the only other known ai outside of rasputin with the potential to learn exo-speak is failsafe, though she has shown little inclination thus far to learn it, or if she knows it already does not use it.
interestingly, ghosts of exo guardians are able to understand exo-speak and translate for their guardian if need be. this is most likely due to their unique ability to comprehend the complicated machinery that make up exominds.
