LG V40 ThinQ review: Delayed launch makes it lose out in premium segment

After a huge gap of around four months, South Korean electronics major LG has launched a flagship smartphone, the V40 ThinQ, in India. The phone boasts a triple-camera module on the back and a dual-camera module on the front. It has a premium glass-metal-glass build, top-notch specifications and a vivid P-OLED screen of a QHD resolution. With all these, it would have been an aspirational product, but only if it was lauched in time. Considering that the smartphone landscape is changing rapidly, the LG V40 ThinQ might seem a misfit among current-generation premium smartphones of today.

Design

The LG V40 ThinQ is covered with glass on the front and back and has a metallic chassis sandwiched in between. The sand-blasted glass on the back has a matte finish, which makes it less prone to fingerprints. The triple rear cameras are stacked horizontally, covered under a single piece of glass for a uniform profile. The circular fingerprint sensor under the camera module is easy to reach with your index finger.

On the front, the phone is dominated by a notch-based screen. Unlike other notch-screen smartphones which normally have almost no bezels on top and sides but a huge one at the bottom, the LG V40 ThinQ has proportionate bezels all around it. That gives it uniform look. The phone’s notch is also small, considering that it sports a dual-camera module, speaker and sensors all crammed in together.

Display

The LG V40 ThinQ has a 6.4-inch QHD resolution P-OLED screen that is bright, vivid and sharp. The screen is a delight to use, especially as it renders high-definition videos or HDR clips. It has a good sunlight legibility that makes it easy to use in bright outdoors. Though the screen is set to use all available pixels by default, there is an option to lower the screen resolution to fullHD+ or HD+ for lower battery consumption at the expense of sharpness. Mindig van hova fokozni: öt kamerával mutatkozott be az LG V40 Thinq

Az LG V szériája mindig is érdekes megoldásokat vonultatott fel, elvégre nem sok gyártónál láttunk másodlagos kijelzőt a maga idején egyébként is méretes megjelenítő felett. Bár az extra körítés az évek alatt változott, a sorozat fő jellemzői mindig is a kiváló hangzás, az átlagosnál valamivel magasabb szintű strapabírás, valamint kifejezetten hangsúlyos képességek videózás vagy fotózás terén. Ez utóbbi az a terület, amit az LG V40 Thinq kapcsán előtérbe került és ennek értelmében kapott a készülék összesen öt kamerát. De miért is kell ennyi objektív egy telefonra?

Az egyes gyártók több alternatív megoldással is kísérleteztek már a több kamerás megoldások terén, az LG a Huawei után a második gyártó, aki tripla kamerát tett a hátlapra. Az elsődleges, 12 megapixeles modul háromtengelyes optikai stabilizátort, PDAF autofókuszt, illetve lézeres fókusz rásegítést is kapott, látószöge 78 fokos, numerikus apertúrája pedig f/1,5-ös, azaz elég magas fényérzékenységgel rendelkezik. Ehhez egy 16 megapixeles nagylátószögű egység társul autofókusz nélkül, 107 fokos látószöggel, míg a harmadik, már szintén autofókuszos kamera egy telefotó lencsével rendelkezik, 45 fokos belátással. Videózás terén ezúttal is komoly a felhozatal, a V40 Thinq ugyanis 4K minőségben, akár 60 képkocka / másodperc részletességgel rögzít, míg a hangot 192 kHz-es minőségben rögzíti a videóhoz. 

A maradék két kamera jól sejthető módon az előlapra került egy 8 és egy 5 megapixeles egység képében. Mindkettő viszonylag nagy, 80 illetve 90 fokos látószöggel rendelkezik, a portré mód vagy bokeh effekt mindkét oldalon elérhető opció, nyilván ehhez az előlapi duplázott kamera is hasznos segítséget nyújt.

Az említett szelfi modulok egyébként egy notchban kaptak helyet, amit  egy 6,4 hüvelykes P-OLED kijelző ölel körül a maga 3120 x 1440 pixeles felbontásával és a Gorilla Glass 5 borítással. Ezen a megjelenítőn csodálhatjuk meg az LG saját kezelőfelületét és a 8.1-es Androidot, amely a közeljövőben elvileg 9-esre frissül ezen a készüléken is. Hardveres szempontból abszolút csúcskategóriáról beszélgetünk, a processzor Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-ös, vagyis az idei eddigi csúcs. Ehhez 6 gigabájt rendszermemória és 64 gigabájtnyi háttértár tartozik microSD bővíthetőséggel.

Az ujjlenyomat olvasó továbbra is a hátlapon, a kamerák alatt leledzik, ami mögött viszont mindössze egy 3300 mAh-ás akkumulátor található. Ez nem csak ránézésre tűnik karcsúnak, az első tesztek gyér üzemidőt emlegetnek. Szerencsére legalább adott a gyorstöltés (Qualcomm Charge 3.0) és a készülék vezeték nélkül is képes felvenni áramot. További extrák közt van még egy tisztességes hangchip, ami minőségi analóg jellé alakítja a digitális tartalmakat. Analóg jelhez pedig elsősorban a 3,5 mm-es jack csatlakozó dukál, amit annak ellenére is sikerült megtartani a Type-C USB mellett, hogy maga a készülék iP68-as vízállósági és MIL-STD 810G ütődés- és rázkódásvédelmi tanúsítványt is kapott. Mindehhez egyébként egy igencsak baráti 167 grammos súly és  158,8 x 75,7 x 7,6 milliméteres méretek járnak.

Az első V40-esek október 18-án kerülnek piacra, nagyjából 900 dolláros áron, átszámítva nagyjából 253.000 forintnak felel meg, de a hazai ár az itteni viszonyok függvényében alakul.
