“fuck,” she whispered under her breath as another rod of lightning crashed down into the earth somewhere in the distance. leslie had always been scared of thunder, a trait she had picked up after being scared and alone in creaky orphanages and funnily enough, from her mother. all she wanted was to get out of this rainy little city and back to her cozy apartment in new york but unfortunately, planes and rain do not mix very well. “any updates?” leslie asked the woman sitting next to her.

to be completely honest, leslie already forgot the name of the town she almost lived in for her entire life. it was fitting for her biological family, really. being the daughter of a farm girl and a californian man who used to drive a jeep, the quaint area that was still close enough to the bustling city was too perfect. just like her family. leslie needed some fresh air, getting acquainted to this new lifestyle was a little suffocating to say the least. she was grateful, really, but after being alone for so long, it was hard to try and be with such family oriented people.
so she set off to explore her almost home, visiting the staples like dorothy’s diner and sunshine florists and the arcade that had been there since the late 70′s. she took a trip to a few landmarks and the library, trying to learn about the history of it all. again, this was the perfect place for her family. with a to-go hot fudge milkshake in her hand, she set off to the park.
now, it would have been a completely normal experience if she didn’t know who he was. leslie had read about him at the town library in a book called ‘unsolved mysteries of the hudson county’ and sure enough, an entire page was dedicated to just his picture. “i-is it cool if i sit here?” leslie asks. she would’ve tried to find any other place but the grass was still wet from the melting snow and there were literally no other benches around. why was she freaking out? she had fire powers for the god’s sake! “if not, i can uh, find somewhere else.” what the fuck.

“hey there,” leslie said, awkwardly cradling a flimsy paper plate filled with pizza in her hand. “everyone had their fair share and we didn’t want it to go to waste so do you want the last slice?” she asked with a hopeful expression. “we’re also kind of really loud so take this as an i’m sorry.”

“have you ever just wanted something so fuckin’ bad that you can’t even sleep?” she asked, leaning her head against the wall as she let out a heavy sigh. callbacks were all she could think of and even though the cast list was going to go up in another day or so, leslie was still restless. “like i know i shouldn’t even have auditioned in the first place ‘cause i can barely keep up with school as it is,” she groaned, running a tired hand through her messy hair. “but i’m just so close.”

“Then come on, Steve,” she grinned, grabbing his hand and pulling him along. “What harm can happen from sneaking into a winery?”

Leslie took a deep breath before she stepped out of her car. Being back in her small little hometown was a little surreal. The hustle and bustle of New York City was something she had grown accustomed to over the years. The endless noise, the bright lights, doing what she loved.. Leslie had almost forgotten what her old home was like.
After three long years, her contract was finally up. Opening on Broadway and then signing on for the national tour was a lot but hey, she did it. Leslie had of course, had come home to visit her family during the holidays but never had time to see the one person she wanted to see most. Shane. Her best friend. She wasn't even sure she could even call him that anymore but every city she visited, she always made sure to send a post card wih a small note as if it was a little reminder that her dream came true and that he helped her achieve those dreams.
Shane’s house looked the same as to when she left. The roof where they would spend hours talking seemed to have been left untouched. Leslie could almost remember their last conversation before she moved thousands of miles away. The actress quickly snapped herself out of her thoughts and got out of her car. She ran her fingers through her hair before lifting up a hesitant fist up to the front door and giving it three hard knocks.
