“Betty!” West scrambled up, watching his cyborg not quite synth best friend fall to his knees. And then onto his face. That was bad. So fucking bad. He pulled his pistol, dodging the rust devil’s swing, not noticing the assultron abomination running to attack West now that the former robobrain was no longer a problem.
West backed up, aiming at the remaining rust devil, managing a shot as Gabriel pushed him onto the ground. West could feel the blast of the assaultron under Gabriel’s body, gasping in dirt.
The blast of heat from the assaultron’s attack seared his skin. It burned, and continued to burn his clothing after. Gabriel rolled off of West while the robot recharged, and put out the flame before it could get worse. He grit his teeth against the pain of his blistered skin now dusted with dirt. Something he’d need to bandage later. The focus now was on survival for both of them.
Gabriel pulled himself into a kneeling position and aimed his pistol at the robot’s optic sensor -- assumed to be behind its barbaric skull headpiece. After a splintering of bone and thrown sparks, the metal creature staggered backward. He fired a few more rounds in an attempt to take it down, but the shots pinged harmlessly against its carapace. A disheartening click click from his pistol warned of an empty clip. He’d need distance if he were to switch to his rifle.
