“And how did you come to be in the path of these beasts, may I ask? Thrusting yourself into certain danger on purpose were you, or did they come across you unawares? Maybe you were defending a kitten or a fledgling?”

“My lionfish… Nope. Honestly don’t. Sorry, sir,” Ron shrugged somewhat dizzily. Truth be told, he was sorry, but mostly because he had a feeling that remembering that would have helped him to feel less like there was some sort of drums-only orchestra setting up rehearsal space in between his ears.

“Can I go to hospital, sir? Only I think that I need to lie down for a bit…” The room was in-focus now, but only slightly better. “Although, I might need some help getting there.”

Severus sniffed, disapproving and displeased. If the boy couldn’t even pay enough attention to remember what he’d done…

“You could go to hospital. Of course, depending on exactly what you put in the potion you just drank, you could end up dying halfway up the stairs.” It wasn’t a likely outcome to be fair, and probably he was being cruel to scare the boy with that, but honestly – these children needed to learn to take potions seriously. It wasn’t the fanciest, flashiest branch of magic, but it merited all the more respect because of that and they tended to treat it like it was little more than…than cookery. As if they could goof-off and chat with their friends and haphazardly dump some badly-chopped roots into their cauldron, and end up with something potable. A bit of a scare might be exactly what Weasley needed to straighten himself out – if that was possible. Honestly Severus was not, and had never been, overly impressed with Harry’s best friend. Clearly the boy took after his father when it came to that sort of thing, not his mother.

Severus looked down at the essay in front of him. He turned the parchment over, as though hoping to find something better on the other side; it was blank. He looked up at the students laboring in front of him, almost two dozen heads bent low over cauldrons and half-chopped ingredients. Ordinarily he didn’t grade essays during class; potions was not the sort of lesson where the professor could turn away and leave the students to their own devices. Potions required concentration, attention, supervision. And he hadn’t been grading the essays; just glancing at them, making sure he had everyone’s. And that, at least, was not the problem: no one had forgotten to hand in their essays today.

But perhaps in at least one case that had been a near thing.

Snape’s black eyes tracked across the room until they centered on one untidy mane of dark hair. “Potter!” he snapped, and a number of heads jerked up although most were quick to look away again. “Come up here,” he ordered. When the boy hesitated Severus added, “I’m sure that Mr. Weasley can look after your potion without you for a few minutes.” He was sure of no such thing, but then again -- would it make a difference?

Finger tapping against the unsatisfactory essay Severus waited until the green-eyed Gryffindor was standing in front of his desk before he spoke again: “Harry,” he said this time, his voice a little softer -- although with tones as acerbic and pointed as his, that was probably hard to tell -- “what exactly is this supposed to be?” Severus held up the essay: scrawled text meandered across the paper like drunken ants. A half-colony of ants no less, maybe fewer. Certainly if it did meet the length requirements it would take creative measuring and even then it only managed to come close because the ants didn’t seem to have much sense of direction, at least not enough of one to maintain straight lines. It might not have been the worst essay that Harry had ever turned in...but if there had been a worse one, Severus couldn’t recall it right now.

I would be delighted. And I have no qualms about frightening the students with the revelation that even professors occasionally exist outside the school’s boundaries. I’m sure it will be good for them to discover such astonishing truths of the world. And as I recall, we both recovered well enough from our first brush with Minerva beyond the castle’s halls, so I’m sure the casualty list won’t be too high. No one the world can’t stand to lose, probably.

What about noon? We could do lunch. Unless you’ve already got plans for that?
