Entry 611: The Vaadwaur
Home World: Vaadwaur Prime
Occupation: Revived warriors of the week
First Appearance: "Dragon's Teeth” (VOY, 1999)
Summary: In the 15th century, these reptilian humanoids were among the most feared and powerful beings in the galaxy. A species of scientists and raiders, they ran rampant across much of the Delta Quadrant. They were the masters of "Underspace", a series of interconnected subspace tunnels that allows for incredibly swift travel throughout the Delta Quadrant. Their range spread from Talaxian space at the farthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant, to possibly the Alpha Quadrant itself. They would appear like lightning out of Underspace, tearing through fleets and starbases without any warning before retreating where nobody could follow them. Yet, their raids and attacks on other species could not continue forever. In 1484, a number of their former victim species rose up, and beat back the Vaadwaur all the way to their home planet. Vaadwaur Prime was bombed to ashes, and irradiated thoroughly enough to be uninhabitable for over a thousand years. Underspace was subsequently claimed by the much more peaceful Turei, who guarded it forever after. . Their name is still remembered across the Delta Quadrant today; the word "Vaadwaur" means "Fool" in the old Talax-Ilzay tongue. This is not meant to imply that the Vaadwaur are foolish, but that associating oneself with them is a foolish thing to do.
However, the Vaadwaur were not totally destroyed. A battalion of Vaadwaur and their starships managed to seal themselves away in underground stasis units, to be awakened in 5 years' time. However, the bombing was so severe that the computer systems were damaged, and the units failed to awaken them at all. Over time, several of the units failed, killing the Vaadwaur within, but many more simply kept running, keeping them alive for centuries.
Over 800 years later, the USS Voyager took refuge on Vaadwaur Prime to escape a group of Turei, who were attempting to either board the vessel to erase all information pertaining to Underspace, or to destroy them in trying. Voyager's crew awakened the Vaadwaur, and unwittingly unleashed a dreadful menace back into the galaxy. The ex-conquerors were not pleased to see so many new civilizations moving back into their old territories, particularly the ever-expanding Borg. While Voyager and the Turei managed to wipe out a significant number of the Vaadwaur starships, many more have escaped into Underspace and they have not been seen since...
