In response to those who regard love as self-forgetfulness, Vacek argues from a Christian perspective that "a strict policy of self-forgetfulness is neither possible nor desirable. The Gospel, which so often offers us the prospect of a more abundant life, is not very supportive of such a polciy." From a theological perspective, self-forgetfulness amounts to not valuing what God values and what others should rightfully value. "Not to love ourselves," adds Vacek, "is prima facie not to cooperate with the love that God has for us. It is sinful." What God affirms we ought also affirm.
