Multiple people whose opinion you respect will recommend that you absolutely read a book about the theory of a particular art form, assuring you that it will radically change and expend your perspective and that it is vital for your development as an artist that you are aware of these fundamental ideas. And you try to read it and it's some of the most meandering pseudo-academic sleep-inducing drivel you've ever read, that spends dozens and dozens of pages not actually saying anything, while boasting about how other theories have "neglected or obfuscated these important ideas". And after giving up halfway and throwing the book across the room (metaphorically), you're left baffled at how anyone could take anything useful out of this book except thru an overactive imagination or the use of hallucinogens.
