This is, of course, inspired by @our-queer-experience and also @our-genderfluid-experience and @our-genderqueer-experience !

I thought it would be cool to make one for nonbinary people! But of course anyone is welcome here!

i've seen other people use the tag our nonbinary experience or other our x experience. is that so these blogs pick up on it or is it like a less gatekeepy sounding version of "actually nonbinary"?

Any “our _ experience” blogs you’ve seen were inspired by @our-queer-experience so that’s why they’re all the same format. All the blogs like this are places for people to share their experiences in being the different identities they’re themed around, no gatekeeping here, this blog is for anyone!

To add on to what a previous anon was saying about androgyny being treated as masculine:

I feel like the fact that a lot of people think "androgynous=try to look as masculine as possible" points to a larger issue, which is that a lot of people think that nonbinary is just a subcategory of woman. Unfortunately, a lot of people generally think nonbinary people are "basically women," who can only look androgynous if they try to look less like women/more masculine. This is probably also why most "gender neutral" haircuts you find on Google are very short, and a lot of "androgynous" names are ones that used to be considered masculine. People can't imagine androgyny going the other way around, because they think it must always be trying to move away from femininity. And this leads to nonbinary people being pushed towards masculinity, even if they don't really feel any more drawn to that than they do to femininity. Even if presenting as masculine makes them feel dysphoric. (No shade to nonbinary people who genuinely do prefer to present as masculine, you're cool. I just mean people being pushed towards that whether they want it or not.)

Which is sad. I think we need more enbies with skirts and long hair and names like Lily or Stephanie. Masculinity is just as "gender" as femininity, so why can masculinity be seen as androgynous but femininity can't?

I completely agree, although it’s sad that it’s what people think about nonbinary people. Skirts and long hair can be just as androgynous, and people who present that way are so cool, and also just as nonbinary as people who have short hair and wear trousers.

Lots of love for all nonbinary people who are androgynous but called feminine, you’re valid!
