I don't know a great deal about Valeri Vasilyev, other than being a defensive stud and the murder thing, but one of my favorite stories--
According to their friends and family, Valeri Kharlamov was best friends with a woman named Tatiana. They had a friends with benefits thing, but both thought the other was trash (affectionate) romantically. But Tatiana did want a romantic relationship with somebody sometime, so she was complaining about why she couldn't meet any men who weren't trash (derogatory), and Valeri K was like, "I do have access to A Lot of men", and they went hunting across the Moscow sports teams.
Tanya selected Valeri V out of the lineup. Valeri K, who was already good friends with Valeri V, was reportedly over the moon because they could now unite to form some kind of friendship-powered super mecha. Based on the fact that he was already good friends with Valeri K, Valeri V was used to hot people telling him what to do, and the two were soon married.

Hello!
Valeri Vasiliev
Partly, I just love getting to show any old photographs. Old portraits often have a heavy oil-painted light that casts all the pieces of someone’s face larger. I like seeing those lines and skate-cut scars.
Playing for Dynamo Moscow in the regular season, Vasiliev was also a captain of the national team and played with them for thirteen years. In 1978 he had a heart attack but decided to play in and win the World Championships anyway, and then added three more for a total of eight because fuck dying, basically.
But really, the photo I like best and think about more of Vasiliev is this one (via byltakoyhockey on Twitter) of him pausing at the boards during practice to speak with his wife.
The black and white angles cut with soft focus makes me think about this rather simple ivory silk crêpe shift by James Galliano, which is overlaid with the serrated shapes of black chiffon carnations and their stems, the outlines couched in white cord. Part of Galliano’s Dolores collection, the carnation was used in the style of Mexican cinema to represent undying love.
