It was pure happenstance that Hope happened to be in her dad’s office when he got the call, and she may have harangued him a little into taking her along, but who could blame her? The tragic story of two teenage boys driving a little too fast, one survived and the other didn’t. Only the story took a twist when the supposed dead body spontaneously combusted in the county morgue and her father had to dispatch a team of vampires to compel the coroner and his three aides from spreading the news. In the ensuing chaos, both boys had disappeared without a trace, with a few clothes and some cash missing from their foster home in Atlanta. Tracking them was more annoying than anything, and Hope was reconsidering her desire to tag along, but a quick run through the woods, a sleep spell, and both boys were somewhat gracefully shoved into the back seat of her father’s car. During the drive, Hope found herself repeatedly glancing at the curly-haired one that was at the bottom of all this. Landon Kirby. An unassuming name, and not one that brought to mind any ancient powerful family, but clearly there was something different about him. After all, he came back to life, but he still had a heartbeat, and didn’t need blood to survive. A part of her was intrigued, wondering if there were more like him out there, or if he was the only one of his kind, like her. The spell should wear off soon, especially as they were nearing New Orleans.
