Dark Shadows: Chapter 10
Chapter 10:
Jughead parked his bike beside the side entrance, that way he’d have a way to make a quick exit if necessary. He pulled his helmet off, strapping it to the handlebar before pulling an unopened pack of cigarettes out of his inner jacket pocket. He hadn’t smoked in years but he knew he’d need them tonight, what with all the stress he was under being back here.
He pulled one out of the pack, holding it between his teeth as he searched for his lighter. The sudden flash of a Zippo flicked in his peripheral and he started, ready to defend himself if need be.
“Take a chill pill, J. It’s just a light,” Jughead cringed when he heard the smooth temper of her voice.
“Daisy,” Jughead replied in greeting, his accent gone for the moment. He didn’t normally drop it, but it was just part of his Serpent persona. He collected his thoughts before taking a drag from his cigarette without even turning to look at her. “How’d you know I was here, anyway?”
“You know how it goes, we always know when our maker is near,” she said, biting her lip and drinking him in. “I could smell you a mile down the road.”
Jughead finally looked at the familiar crimson ringlets, his heart aching that he was to blame for her current state. He didn’t mean for her to get hurt, it just happened and he was too late to stop it. He did the only thing he could think of: he turned her into a monster.
