Considering how v!Ren doesn't know how to read, write, or count, there's a pretty high chance that his mother also never knew how to do any of that either.

His mother who worked as a baker, and therefore would've had to have memorised all of her recipes, worked out quantities without counting, recognised ingredients without being able to read their labels.

Ren's mother, who got fired because she mixed up the salt and the sugar in the cookies she made. Ren's mother who made a single mistake while she was likely tired and overworked and having to raise her young son.

Ren's mother, who lost her job and the home of her and her son, which then led to Ren getting cursed and his lack of trust in the supernatural/dark forces, which then led to his eventual death.
