Nick Van Exel's son sentenced to 60 years for murder
The son of former NBA point guard Nick Van Exel has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the 2010 murder of his friend. Nicky Van Exel, 22, shot is best friend Bradley Eyo in a dispute at Van Exel’s home. The defense claimed it was a tragic accident but, prosecutors claimed the killing came about because Eyo was planning to snitch on Van Exel in regards to a string of robberies committed by the two earlier that year. Eyo had already been charged but authorities lacked the evidence to charge Van Exel. Eyo was to have a hearing in 10 days and authorities say that he would have likely implicated Van Exel in the crimes.
Van Exel shot a killed Eyo with a 12-gauge shotgun. Van Exel apparently called his dad right after the incident, a call which the elder Van Exel missed. Nicky Van Exel then wrapped his dead friend in plastic, dragged him to the garage and loaded the body into an SUV. He drove to Lake Ray Hubbard, on the outskirts of Dallas, Texas, where he dumped the body. He then returned home, cleaned up the crime scene and ditched the gun in a creek on the North side of Dallas.
Prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty. With his current sentence, Van Exel will be eligible for parole in 30 years.
