What is the lyrical connection with the mashup if ttpd and maroon?
This was another mashup I had no immediate recollection of, until I watched it and remembered this had one of my all-time favourite bits from surprise song o'clock:
So on a macro level, I imagine part of the genesis of this mashup was that it was two of her favourite children as per their frequent appearances on the B Stage, and she wanted to give them a final send-off before the end of tour. (Which is so valid lol.)
But to hone in, listening to it, it kind of tells the story of The Manuscript when you get down to it, at least to me:
For example:
When the morning came we were cleaning incense off your vinyl shelf 'Cause we lost track of time again Laughing with my feet in your lap Like you were my closest friend "How'd we end up on the floor anyway?" You say, "Your roommate's cheap-ass screw-top rosé, that's how," I see you every day now
to me is this in another font:
They compared their licenses He said, "I'm not a donor, but I'd give you my heart if you needed it" She rolled her eyes and said, "You're a professional," He said, "No, just a Good Samaritan,"
And:
At dinner, you take my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one People put wedding rings on, and that's the closest I've come To my heart exploding
is another instance of:
He said that if the sex was half as good as the conversation was Soon they'd be pushing strollers But soon it was over
And finally this:
And I wake with your memory over me That's a real fucking legacy, legacy And I wake with your memory over me That's a real fucking legacy to leave
is:
She thought about how he said since she was so wise beyond her years Everything had been above board She wasn't sure
---
I don't necessarily think The Manuscript was the intention (although, given that she ended the tour with it... maybe it was, idk), because ultimately the songs and this mashup paint the same kind of devolution of a relationship that makes it so #relatable across the board of any breakup. The all-consuming lust in the beginning (Maroon verse + chorus 1), that consumption that turns into something toxic full of red flags (TTPD bridge), then the aftermath (Maroon bridge + outro). I'd forgotten about this one, but it really might be one of her tightest mashups from the tour.
Also, again, I love her theatrics during the TTPD part. She truly is like "what the fuck even was that am I right" and I love that she can laugh it off in her music and be as theatrical as she wants to be 😂
