"Sleep" 9x12inch watercolor . I'm not a fan but I love the artist, means I'm not familiar with all of his works but I admire him for his life story. And I don't think we can separate Vincent from the context of his paintings so in my version of "The Bedroom" (the original title) I'll stress the context as well... . For the #vangoghmuseumchallenge hosted by @royaltalens and @vangoghmuseum , I chose the Bedroom (the Bedroom in Arles) (swipe to see Vincent's letter to Theo describing the same) The Bedroom - "suggest certain rest or dream" - "color must be abundant in this part" - "white..not applied... No type of shade or shadow" (flat rendering) - the colors we see now are NOT the original colors Van Gogh used. The blue was originally a purple color as evidenced by research AND his letters. - loved this painting so much he painted it 3 times . Rest is different for different people and many have remarked that Vincent's bedroom was not restful at all :( I disagree seeing as it's the photo that calmed me as I scrolled through the museum pieces. But I'm also a bit insane with my multiple personality... So maybe we who have mental conditions will also be the only ones understanding the "why's". Keeping true to Vincent's piece, I also did not use white paint and did not paint shadows. I did not think or imagine but painted immediately what came to mind using whatever colors first showed up in my mind...which brings the "why". Why two sleeping mermaids? In the first photo, you see my two girls resting. Them at rest makes me rest. It's only when they are both sleeping that I can sleep too... The sight of two sleeping possibly dangerous creatures calms me... And yet, the contrasting colors seem loud and vibrant. This piece is taking forever (exag, I know but that's what it feels like) but I refuse to paint it without a "peaceful" and sleepy mindset...
