Tutorial 7: Cubase VariAudio
This tutorial was all about the VariAudio function within Cubase 6, this is a plugin similar to AutoTune and Melodyne used to correct the the pitch of audio.
The sample we were given was an acapella of Kelis singing the song "Acapella", I experimented with quantising and straightening the pitch of the audio. Finally I created multiple tracks and used VariAudio to create a 3 octave vocal harmony.
Feedback:
The feedback I received was that I had used to VariAudio function well, but could have been more creative in my harmonies.
Screen shot shows altered audio file. The audio is flat and tuned precisely. This has given the audio a 'vocoder' type of sound. Similar to the artist Cher's vocal style. The process behind 'flattening' the audio is very simple and effective, i just increased the 'straighten pitch' control.
Screen shot shows unaltered audio file. The audio is very erratic and tuning issues are prominent.

Cubase's Variaudio was the focus of the tutorial. Variaudio is a pitch shifter, similar to melodyne and autotune. This session, i was given a sample audio file (Accapella), which was mainly singing. This track had numerous sections which had tuning issues. Utilising this pitch shifter i was able to correct these issues by analysing the audio file and locating the tuning issues. Then the pitch shifter allowed me to alter the pitch, either by semi-tones at a time or almost by Hertz, which is very useful if the note is only slightly out of tune and i want to repair it without it sounding obvious.
Feedback: The tutor suggested I try and implement harmonies. I proceeded to do this by copying the audio file twice and then lowering the pitch of the all notes by a 5th on the second Copy. I found however by only having harmonies in specific places sounded more effective than through the entire track.
next cubase session
variaudio session. Something I have previous experience in and am fairly adept, however it is good to learn new aspects of existing technologies for the pursual of musical creativity. (tutorial 5)
Variaudio - learning on the pitch and quantize of audio along with pitch straightening. useful for vocal harmonies and potentially fatter drum sounds (take note this could be utilised for snares in drum and bass),
