Wrapping up some notes on vascular pathologies this morning ft. this cute little vase my friend made for me, which I filled with fake flowers for the time being until I purchase a real plant.

International Women's Day: what's your take on feminism?

I'm a day behind and International Women's day was yesterday, but I cannot stress this enough: intersectional feminism!!

Also, from my understanding, "feminism" is the overarching movement for equality among all genders, but that might be perceived differently among different cultures or countries where there is a different conceptualization of gender and its role in society.

If anyone wants to point me towards some quality feminist literature/media I’d love to hear about it, I think it would be especially interesting to learn the history of feminism in countries other than the US (I know more about that because I live there).

its not a respiratory virus. It is a viremia disease.

It can infect the lungs, it can present in flu like symptoms, but it is not the sum of those parts. Those are minor inflections.

It destroys and traumatizes blood tissue. It pulverizes the hemoglobin in red blood cells, preventing them from carrying O to capillaries and other tissue. And then it infects other tissue to germinate and spread exponentially throughout the body.

Even if everyone wound up dying due to kidney failure from c0vid, we still wouldn’t call it a kidney disease. It just so happens you notice when your lungs start melting before you realize your kidneys gone and been scrambled.

But you do tend to die faster when your lungs, and the vascular system, go off a cliff. And now they’re getting the vascular pathologists out here explaining the disaster fire.

I do get it, that people hit up the hospital and their O levels have tanked. It’s not always cause the lungs have suffered third degree burns, it’s the red blood cells.

You can’t go by if you have a sore throat, or a stuffy nose, or a cough. C0vid can infect the lungs first, but it can equally slam some other organ it finds appealing. The point being, if it’s found it’s way into your lungs and you start experiencing THOSE symptoms, then it’s kind of too late to go - “Yikes.”

But better yet, don’t contract it in the first place if you can help it. Yikes

Kawasaki Disease or Mucocutaneous Lymph Node Syndrome

Children, <4y.o., from Japan, Hawaii, California

Small, medium-sized, big arteries

Coronary Arteries 70% affected => 1-2% die due to coronary Aneurysms (that end in cardiac tamponade) or coronary thrombus (MI)

Early administration of salicilates (aspirine) and gammaglobulins: decrease cardiac complications

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS: Very Similar to a Viral infx, 4 or more of the following criteria make the dx

Acute febrile illness (doesn´t respond to antibiotics)

Conjunctivitis

Erythema & Erosion of oral mucosa (strawberry tongue), inflamed pharynx.

Cervical Lymphadenopathy

Generalized skin maculopapular rash

Peeling & erythema of the fingertips

Segmental Necrotizing Vasculitis => Weakened wall => Aneurysm formation

Aneurysmally dilated epicardial coronary artery is occluded by thrombus.

Takayasu Arteritis or Pulseless Disease

Females, young, middle-aged, Asian

Mediaum-sized & large arteries

Aortic Arch and major branches (at the ostia)

Tx: corticosteroids

Subclavian Artery mostly affected: loss of pulse in upper extremeties (no radial pulse), cold arms.

Ophtalmic abnormalities: visual loss, fields defects, retinal hemorrages

Neurologic Abnormalities

Granulomatous Vasculitis + Extensive Intimal Fibrosis

The intima is thickened and fibrotic. There is a focus of necrosis in the media with an inflammatory infiltrade

Irregular Fibrous thickening of Aortic wall

Computed tomographic image obtained following intravenous administration of contrast demonstrates thickening and enhancement of the wall of the aorta at the level of the aortic arch (arrows). The patient was a 32-year-old woman.
