OC Interview: Vatna
Thanks for the tag @cleverblackcat, @mageofholyandraste, @darethshirl! It sounds fun!
Introduction
This event was organized a few weeks prior to the Winter Palace ball. Ambassador Josephine Montilyet had invited a few Orlesian journalists to Skyhold to interview the newly appointed Inquisitor.
Can you introduce yourself?
Vatna Einarsdotten Selkesdotten of Two Falcon Hold. (a moment of silence) In the Frostback Mountains. (another moment of silence as the interviewers wait for her to say something else) Inquisitor of the Second Inquisition. (it seems that she won’t say anything more, so one of the journalists asks the next question)
What are your gender identity, orientation, and relationship status?
Is that what you ask every Lowlander? (grumbles) Alright. I see myself a woman. Who I invite or don’t invite to my bed is my very own matter. I am unmarried and have never been before. If you’re curious, yes, the Avvar may marry multiple times in their life if they wish so. Does this answer satisfy you?
Where and when were you born?
I was born in Two Falcon Hold, eighteen... no, nineteen winters ago. (she corrects herself as she remembers that winter came and went when she was away from home, making her one winter older than when she left)
WIP Wednesday
Thanks for the mentions @cleverblackcat @rakshadow @samuraisaucefrites! And thanks for all the tags I received in the past... however many weeks that was since I last participated in the WIP Wednesday. It’s been a while and I’m still at the same point - or rather, my poor Vatna is. She almost has Tyrdda’s staff in her grasp - alas! not yet.
~
“These lands… the Avvar no longer live down here,” Vatna explained. “The trail-markers leading to the vault have been forgotten, and Lowlanders never knew they existed.”
“Ah, yes, the divide between the Lowlands and the Highlands. It wasn’t always so steep,” the woman remarked wistfully.
“It wouldn’t be there at all if Thelm Gold-Handed hadn’t tried to steal the tribes by feeding them lies. It wouldn’t be so steep if Luthias Dwarfson hadn’t deceived Morrighan’nan, promising a union between them. And it wouldn’t get even steeper if Calenhad offered us equal rights without being forced to join the Chantry,” Vatna said in a more sour tone.
“Mayhap, mayhap not,” the guardian sighed, her expression somber. Gazing into Vatna’s eyes, perhaps glimpsing her thoughts through them, she said softly: “So much has happened since I greeted the last visitor… My mother said there would always be quarrel. It started when the first two creatures met, and it will continue until the last two creatures still breathe. Yet a quarrel needn’t end in bloodshed.”
“Your mother… You are the reflection of Heidrun, Tyrdda’s daughter?” Vatna guessed, eyeing up the woman from head to toe. Like many spirits, her visage preserved her in prime years, but her stature didn’t quite match that of an adult human nor a dwarf. Instead, she remained somewhere halfway between the two. She was wearing a dwarven-style armour, but the ornaments on her shield and sword looked undeniably Avvar.
“I had a father, too.” Heidrun raised an eyebrow.
“Prince Hendir.” Vatna added, embarrassed that she failed to mention him. The dwarven prince deserved recognition, just as much as the Avvar-Mother.
“The children-giver himself.” His daughter’s ghost smiled unexpectedly. “Hendir sent his best stonemasons to build this vault and erect the stelae, for Tyrdda’s gifts to be preserved. My heritage, though I couldn’t use its power to the fullest. Others might need it in time, I thought.” The woman turned slightly to the side and touched the doorway. The runes inscribed in the stone lit up. “I… Heidrun asked the augurs to perform the rituals. Moons, many moons passed before the preparations were complete. I watched her in the dream-mirror, and I watched myself, until our reflections laughed and cried the same. And then, it was done. I stayed here to oversee the gifts of Sky and Stone my mother had received, so that other worthy warriors could wield them once more.”

Oh, and also I’m drafting a theory on Avvar symbolism, here’s a sneak peek of the visuals.

Oh my, just look at her! My Avvar girl, Vatna of Two Falcon Hold, daughter of Einar and Selke, Sky Watcher’s apprentice. And her hold-beast made a cameo too!
This icon was painted by @codenameyan, who is an absolute pleasure to work with! Thank you for such a great piece of art! Vatna says: Lady keep you!
Dragon Age OC as a companion
I saw the “OC as a companion” trend started by @little-lightning-lavellan and I really wanted to hop on with my Avvar girl, Vatna, who is normally the Inquisitor and the protagonist of my fic, Watch the Skies. So here it goes! (Heads up - it got pretty long!)
~~
Vatna (born 9:23 Dragon) is an Avvar mage and a potential companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Title: Sky Watcher’s apprentice
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Class: Mage
Affiliation: Avvar, Inquisition (conditional)
Family: Einar (father), Selke (mother), Hirka (sister)
Background
Vatna Einarsdotten Selkesdotten was born in an Avvar settlement called Two Falcon Hold, where she lived until adulthood. Two Falcon Hold is located in the highest part of the Frostback Mountains. It is largely isolated from the outside world; the news arrives through dwarven merchants and Avvar pathfinders, which resulted in Vatna not having any first-hand experience of the Lowlands.
As a seven year old child, Vatna manifested magical ability, and thus she was linked to a spirit, as is customary among the Avvar. The spirit began teaching Vatna how to control her gift. She received lessons in healing, casting barriers, glyph-making, and other types of skills, but she specialized in offensive magic. She displayed an aptitude for elemental magic, particularly the spells associated with cold.
Several years later, with the basic part of her training complete, Vatna peacefully separated from her spirit teacher. Proving herself as a talented mage, she was chosen to become the next Sky Watcher in her hold, and so she continued studying diligently under the augur’s tutelage.
Vatna also underwent a warrior’s training, combining the skillset of a mage with that of a melee fighter. Her weapon of choice is an axe instead of a staff, though she is proficient at using either. After her appointment as the Sky Watcher’s apprentice, Vatna commissioned a battle axe with a lyrium core from the dwarves of Orzammar.
In 9:41 Dragon, a few weeks before the Conclave, Vatna ventured outside of her hold, travelling through the Lowlands for the first time in her life. Her only companion was a falcon called Himnar.

OC Questionnaire: Vatna Einarsdotten Selkesdotten
I’ve been tagged by @cleverblackcat and @dreadfutures - thanks a lot! Tagging @curiousthimble, @ohmypawsandwhiskers, @samuraisaucefrites, @crackinglamb, if you’d like to take a shot. All OCs are welcome!
Name: Vatna
Alias: Vaa, Icy (given by Varric, rarely used), Inquisitor
Gender: Female
Age: 18 winters old in 9:41 Dragon
Species: Human
Zodiac: aquarius / aries / cancer / capricorn / gemini / leo / libra / pisces / sagittarius / scorpio / taurus / virgo / unknown (not applicable)
Abilities/Talents: Vatna is a mage with an affinity for winter spells. She’s also a powerful Dreamer and was taught to maneuver through the Fade (or rather, the Land of Dreams, as the Avvar call it). Battle magic comes naturally to Vatna, but she didn’t neglect other areas of her training, both magical and martial.
{𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙} Alignment: lawful / neutral / chaotic / good / neutral / evil / true
Religion: Avvar spirit worship
Sins: envy / greed / gluttony / lust / pride / sloth / wrath
Virtues: charity / chastity / diligence / humility / justice / kindness / patience
Languages: Avvar, Common, a few words in Fereldan and dwarven
Family: as her surname might suggest, her mother is named Selke and her father is called Einar. She has a younger sister by the name of Hirka. Her mentor, Sky Watcher Sjör, is like family to Vatna.
Friends: she was well liked in Two Falcon Hold but made few close friends, as most of her time was dedicated to mastering skills required to become an augur and a Sky Watcher. Her best friend was Mikkel, but they had a falling out not long before Vatna left the Hold. She befriended Eir, an Avvar pathfinder she met on the way to the Conclave. Within the Inquisition, she’s been reluctant to open up to her companions, aside from Cole. Eventually, she became close with Harding and Cassandra.
I’ve just received this portrait I commissioned from @didiher and I absolutely love it! Here’s Vatna, my Avvar Inquisitor from Dragon Age, celebrating the summer solstice in her hold. It’s one of the most important holidays to the Avvar people as it marks the day when the Lady of the Skies is closest to the land.
Yes, flower crowns are a key part of the festivities!
Thanks again @didiher for this artwork! I adore the final result!
100 days of writing / WIP whenever
I decided to follow @cleverblackcat's example (thanks for the tag!) and combine a prompt from @the-wip-project with the WIP game (thank you for tagging me two weeks ago @crackinglamb!). I'd like to tag both of you back and also @samuraisaucefrites, @dreadfutures, @a11sha11fade, @tejaswrites, @maythedreadwolftakeyou and anyone who feels like sharing their WIP or trying one of the prompts from the 100 days of writing challenge.
Day 37 (July 7th, 2021): Post your favorite line of dialogue that you’ve written recently
(For context, the following excerpt describe some details from the time my Avvar Inquisitor visited Val Royeaux for the first time. She really didn't like being there.)
Then, Vatna sensed a change in the Land of Dreams. Somewhere nearby, another person crossed the Veil, but it was no ordinary dreamer. She would recognize him anywhere.
Solas.
She kept avoiding him, even after he lent his hand in retrieving Tyrdda’s staff.
If she wished to get away from him, she’d have to push her way through this awful swarm. Perhaps she’d be able to find a door that would lead her elsewhere, away from the city.
Except she didn’t want to do that. For the first time since they met, her instincts didn’t scream at her to either fight or flee from Solas. She didn’t feel the urge to press him for answers or to accuse him for the crimes he committed. Aside from the hold-beast, he was the only familiar figure on this side of the Veil whom she could talk to.
Vatna stopped by the opposite side of the bench that Solas was sitting on. She might not have wished to avoid him that night, but it didn’t mean she would come any closer than thrice an arm’s reach.
“It’s so crowded,” she said instead of a greeting. Her gaze rolled over the sea of sleeping souls, still bewildered by the sight. “I can’t believe something like Val Royeaux can exist and not sink into the ground.”
To her surprise, Solas didn’t question her behaviour. He was watching the Orlesians wandering around the streets with a placid expression on his face. When Vatna approached him, he only gave her a brief glance and a raise of an eyebrow, then returned to his observations.
“The sheer size of a city is not enough of a reason to cause its decline,” Solas replied.
