Surf, Showers and Shakespeare in Guernsey
Mon 3 - Tue 4 August 2015
Monday morning was, as predicted, grey and rainy, so we had no particular plans. I decamped to the Boathouse café to update the blog, and Adrian got on with passage planning and provisioning.
About 2pm the rain started to ease off, and I set off for a steep walk up the cobbled streets to the Candie gardens, the flowers bright while still dripping with rain. We ate in a cheerful Italian restaurant – La Perla – a filling three-course meal for just £10.99.
Tuesday
A much brighter morning, although with a strong westerly breeze, and again very high spring tides.
We caught a bus to Vazon Bay to coincide with high water, and watched the surf crash against the sea wall.
After a blustery coffee on the top deck, we walked round the promontory to Cobo Bay.
The sun was strong, and once out of the wind it was quite warm. But the wind was whipping the surf up into a milky, frothing morass, and the sea was heaving in the small rocky coves.
We walked along the length of Cobo Bay before buying fish and chips to eat on an old cobblestone slipway.
Back in the marina the sea had completely disappeared, and the sill looked more like a scrappy beach than anything a yacht might be able to sail over.
We had tickets for a production of Merchant of Venice in Castle Cornet, and I had been anxiously watching the weather, so we brought waterproofs. The set was simple, and the cast was limited, necessitating many quick costume changes. The rain started to fall in the interval, and after a short respite, settled in heavily during the court scene, making Portia’s speech comparing mercy with the “gentle rain” quite apposite. As well as being weather hardened, the company deftly turned a complex text into an entertaining and moving evening.
