You're a scientist researching the strange aliens that keep coming to Earth. The most recent one touched down in the arctic and you're on a boat trying to locate them. You put out bait and wait, just hoping for a single glimpse. There are plenty of seal mers in the area but no sign of extraterrestrials. You're in your dry suit with state of the art gear meant for such cold climates. That is, until a massive shark mer, over 20 feet long, breaches and snaps the line connecting your bait cage to the buoy.
There isn't any time wasted as you dive into the water with your camera and begin videoing the alien mer’s feeding behavior. Once he's done devouring the contents of the bait cage, his gaze shifts to you. You remain relaxed as you see his single golden eye lock onto you and he begins to approach you. You're used to working with large shark mers.
He opens his mouth when he gets within biting range and you promptly shove a fish into it, much to his surprise. You begin petting his face as he chews, careful to be able to redirect him at a moment's notice in care he decides to go for your hand. You continue filming him as you keep feeding him, luring him closer and closer to the research vessel so that your team can get more pictures of him. He seems to relax into your touch as you pet him. After about an hour of interaction, he swims back down into the depths.
You get back into the boat after waiting for him to come back and take some pictures of the seal mers lounging around. You then spend almost all night consulting with your team and making calls to your lab. Your ship is forced into deeper waters when an iceberg gets too close and your captain refuses to stay any longer. The next morning, after copious amounts of caffeine and returning to the last place that you saw him, your team sets out bait while you suit up. The seal mers in the area seem to have left for some reason and the only sounds are from your team and the lapping of the water on the ship and nearby icebergs. You don't have to wait long to see the mysterious mer.
He seems excited to see you when you slide into the freezing water with him. He gently eats fish from your hands, entirely ignoring the nearby bait. You film him and keep your team updated on his strangely friendly behaviors by speaking into the microphone in your full face mask. You can't help but pet him more, running your fingers over his facial scar and gently scratching behind his dorsal fin. He's just so friendly and sweet! Your team regularly comments on what a docile specimen he is as they watch the video streaming on the boat. You chatter to him happily as he looks at you like you're the kindest creature he's ever met.
“Oh, you're just a big ol’ sweetheart, huh? You wanna come back to my lab with me? You'll get lots of yummy food and a nice place to live while I study you. Does that sound nice? I promise I'll take good care of you.” You coo as he slowly begins circling you, letting you touch his fins occasionally gently rubbing up against you.
He's cooperative when you load him onto a specially made stretcher and into a holding tank. He lazily watches you as you talk excitedly about him to your team, smiling whenever you look at him. Your team takes a few more quick pictures of your surroundings as before setting out on the return route.
The cameras can’t see the dismembered mers on the sea floor. It’s too deep to see all of the blood still lingering from the slaughter or the chunks that are the only remnant of the once thriving colony. Conquest doesn't plan on sharing your attention with any other mer. He's never been good at restraint when he finds something that he wants.

DID YOU KNOW that betas ENJOY being punched and kicked in the ribs and tackled? it is in fact very enriching for them! practicing rough behaviors towards your betas can increase longevity, strengthen pack bonds, and encourage instinctual connection! we even have biological clues to let you know we're enjoying it! (listen for the whimpering and gasping and sobbing! these are all good sounds!)

"A bunch of kids who I used to go to school with ended up in Rocket. One of them's dead now. Got stabbed in the thigh and bled out. Saw a different one here in Lumiose yesterday, in the Z-A Royale."
"He went for me, actually. I ended up biting his thumb off, which was.... intense. Not the first time that kinda thing's happened, though."
