As a rule I prefer the fansubs to anything licensed and released. I buy the releases because I want the companies to know there's a market for them, but I tend to watch the fansubs anyway
But let's give them a fair shot.
Can you think of any recent releases that had passable, even good translations?
I mean, they can't ALL be as bad as the Gridman releases...
to be clear i haven't bought a lot of physical releases myself, but from what i know:
mill creek can obviously be very hit or miss (see gridman and the☆ultraman), but considering they typically just take whatever translations tsupro offers them, the showa and new gen shows that i've seen with those subs are pretty solid
shout factory, as much as they've put the bare minimum into their sentai releases, the translations for their kamen riders generally seems to be really well regarded? shout's kuuga is the definitive way to watch the show for sure. i think i remember ryuki having some video quality issues, but otherwise it seems like the teams working on these actually care as opposed to the freelancers they'd use for sentai
but the undisputed champion of toku releases is absolutely discotek. they don't always get the same buzz since the shows they work on are usually older or more obscure compared to stuff like kuuga or tiga, but from what i can tell they've never put out a dud
i know for certain releases they've contacted fansubbers and worked out a deal to use their translations, and they always include fun extras when they're able to. i have their cutie honey the live release and not only do you get the main show, you get the special epilogue episode, a deleted scene, several making of features, and an interview with inoue himself. nobody's putting in the effort like discotek
