Obama intends to nominate Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey as chairman and Navy Adm. James A. Winnefeld as vice chairman. Dempsey is currently the Army chief of staff and Winnefeld is the commander of U.S. Northern Command.
Both Dempsey and Winnefeld have only held their posts for a relatively short period of time. Dempsey took his post as Army Chief of Staff in April, 2010 while Winnefeld was the Joint Staff Director of Strategic Plans and Policy (J-5) prior to his becoming Commander, USNORTHCOM in May of 2010.
