There wasn’t much Alexander Hamilton figured he would be met with in the short expanse he’d always expected his life to be. He had never anticipated the world to come crashing down upon him, that his life would be torn open by his mistakes and he’d live long enough to see the consequences of them. Perhaps that is why he’d done it, ultimately. The affair. For he figured he’d be dead before it caught up to him, that his health would finally give way, that a bullet would find its way into his chest. And yet, and yet here he stood. Icarus with his melted wings. Work was beginning to ware on him as he slept less, drank more, it took all of his will power to show up to the office sober. To deal with clientele, to deal with political bills and politicians that had him screaming. He began to, his temper increasing ten fold since Eliza had left the divorce papers upon his desk. Everyone had noticed, they’d be deaf not to. However, no one dared make a comment, no one but Washington. Washington who had always guided him tenderly through the world and politics, Washington who believed in him, trusted him; despite what the world told him to. He’d always appreciated it more than the man would ever be aware, and that’s why he agreed to this. Agreed to be seated on the wrong side of the man’s desk in his office. Fingers tap-tapping upon the handle of is chair, intricately carved and expensive, but it wasn’t showy like the mahogany in Jefferson’s office, no it was an oak, strong and sturdy, but beautiful, much like the man that sat behind the desk staring at him with a cautious gaze.
“Sir, you asked to see me?”

❝ oh come on, grandpa !!! everyone deserves a present on their birthday !!! ❞ she pulls the other chair around his desk to sit down next to him, her face lit up with excitement and nervous anticipation. her hands press on the seat of the chair as she leans forward towards him. ❝ no hints. just be careful to not drop it, there’s glass.❞
picture it : from the walls hung streamers of blue & white & red. balloons tied neatly to the chairs at the table, and ten presents, meticulously wrapped, so that they matched the ambiance, lay sitting on top of one another, a great pyramid of paper & boxes. eagerly the woman bobs beside her work. she’s beaming. martha loves birthdays.
& today was george’s birthday.
her heels click together, a lip is bitten, a smile breaks through. as soon as he walks through the door, an exclamation of adoration will take place ! “ surprise ! ” she’ll shout, though that’s if she can contain her laugh, which is quite doubtful. “ i love you and happy ! birthday !! ”
@vcnerated // happy birthday old man !

“ i am fine. it is nothing. ”
the young major general had been very confused when he woke up in some random bed, pain coming from a leg that was now bandaged. forgetting for a moment that he had been shot and lost blood to the point of passing out, lafayette had been perplexed as to how he got from brandywine (where he could clearly remember rallying together some american troops who had been retreating in absolute chaos and forming an orderly line to get them away from danger) to here. but then someone had come in and explained to him (in french, thankfully) what had happened, and he had been told that he needed to rest. so he did -- and for quite a while, too -- but when he woke up he was surprised to find that instead of the man who had explained his situation to him being in the room with him, it was instead the general himself. and, as was to be expected, lafayette immediately began begging to be put back in action right away.
“ i can still fight, yes? ”
