Excerpt: “Nah.” Ray said as he shook his head. “Probably nothing special.” “No fucking?” Michael asked. He nudged Ray's arm. “No V-Day Special Fuck?” Ray sighed. “No, Michael. No fucking. No nothing. No plans.” Ray paused. “Shut the fuck up.” Michael backed away in his chair and frowned, pretending to be hurt. “Goddamn, Ray. Fine. I was just messin'.” Michael put a game in his Xbox. “Sorry for bothering.”
“It's Valentine's Day.”
“Yeah?” Ray cocked his eyebrows. “Gee, I had no idea, Michael!” Ray replied sarcastically, a scowl on his face.
“Well, I just thought you should be reminded.” Michael paused. “...You and Joel gonna do anything?”
“Nah.” Ray said as he shook his head. “Probably nothing special.”
“No fucking?” Michael asked. He nudged Ray's arm. “No V-Day Special Fuck?”
Ray sighed. “No, Michael. No fucking. No nothing. No plans.” Ray paused. “Shut the fuck up.”
Michael backed away in his chair and frowned, pretending to be hurt. “Goddamn, Ray. Fine. I was just messin'.” Michael put a game in his Xbox. “Sorry for bothering.”
It was true—Ray and Joel had no plans. It's the day of Valentine's Day and they didn't buy gifts, make plans—they weren't even going to eat out. It's their first together, but they weren't going to make the best of it. It confused Michael greatly, but it was obvious that Ray did not want to talk about it anymore.
Gavin walked into the room just then. “It's Shag Day.” Gavin commented. Ray rolled his eyes.
“Not according to Ray, it isn't.” Michael commented.
Gavin looked over to Ray. “You two aren't going to shag?”
“No.” Ray mumbled, keeping an eye on his monitor despite he wasn't playing or editing anything.
“You guys are lame. First year and you're being bloody boring.” Gavin scoffed, shaking his head. “Meg and I have plans.”
“Yeah?” Michael asked. “Good job, boi!” Michael scooted over and fist-bumped Gavin. “Proud of you.”
Gavin chuckled. “Yeah! I'm assuming you have plans with Lindsay?”
“Why the fuck wouldn't I?”
Ray took a deep breath and shut his eyes, attempting to tune out the Valentines talk.
“What's this about shagging on Valentine's Day?” Geoff asked as he took his headphones off. “Completely missed it.”
“Oh, Ray's not fucking Joel on Valentine's Day.” Michael replied.
“Tell everybody.” Ray sighed, resting his head on his hand. “Thanks.”
“No problem.” Michael chuckled. “I'm just so surprised.”
“I thought you would be one of the first people to fuck. You and Joel are like, sex-craving freaks.” Geoff added.
“Since when was I a 'sex-craving freak'?” Ray asked.
“I dunno. I just assumed.” Geoff mumbled and shrugged.
“Shut the fuck up.” Ray groaned. “Please, stop judging me.”
“Oh, we're judging.” Michael crossed his arms. “Valentine's Day is the perfect day for fucking.”
“Yeah. I know. I noticed. Now shut the fuck up.” Ray slowly grew more and more irritated.
“Hey, Ray. What are you doing for Valentine's Day?” Ryan asked, tuning in to the conversation.
“Oh my God.” Ray stood up from his seat. “Fucking enough. Goddamn, I don't care. I'm doing NOTHING. Nothing for Valentine's Day. Joel agreed to it, okay?” Ray's voice had risen. “So shut the fuck up! It's annoying as hell. If we were really doing something, I would have told you by now. Get off my fucking back and take my word for it!”
In the room above the Achievement Hunter office, Joel could barely hear Ray's voice. He pursed his lips and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I knew this would happen.” Joel mumbled to himself as he shook his head.
“What are you doing for Valentine's Day?” Burnie asked, apparently not hearing the commotion downstairs.
Joel, however, was in the same predicament as Ray—Burnie would not stop asking what he was going to do on Valentine's Day.
“Burnie. Stop.” Joel grumbled.
“What are you doing for Valentine's Day?” Burnie repeated, getting up from his computer chair and standing behind Joel.
“I already told you.”
Burnie repeated the question again. This time, he leaned in closer. “Tell me.” He added.
“Nothing.” Joel replied, and he shrugged his shoulders.
“I refuse to believe it.” Burnie stood back and crossed his arms. “Nobody does 'nothing' on Valentine's Day.”
“Well, believe it or not, people actually do 'nothing' on Valentine's Day. And those people happen to be Ray and I.” Joel paused. “So shut your fucking face. I'm not going to answer your questions anymore.”
Burnie stood, dumbfounded, and sat down once he realized that Joel was being serious. He sat down and went back to work on his computer, not speaking another word to Joel that day. He realized that it was probably too risky.
So, once they got to go home, Ray traveled with Joel instead of Michael. “Thanks for taking me home.”
“No problem.” Joel smiled as they were at a red stoplight. “What, were the others giving you trouble?”
“Yeah.” Ray sighed. “I don't want to talk about it. They're idiots.”
“I heard you yelling from upstairs.”
Ray felt his face turn red. “Yeah?” Ray paused. “Well, they really were bothering me. I swear, every one of them asked me what I was doing—except for Jack. At least he respects me and my decisions.” Ray leaned back into the car seat.
Joel pressed on the gas when the light turned green. “So, you just wanna go home?”
“Yep.” Ray sighed. “Sorry.”
“It's all right.”
It was silent all the way home. When Joel got to Ray's apartment, he gave Ray a little peck on the cheek—and Ray quickly hurried out of the car. He mumbled a quick “I love you” and ran inside, planning on moping around on his couch for the rest of the night—he didn't want to think about Valentine's Day for the next year.
He had a feeling that Joel would like to have done some things in honor of Valentine's Day, but Ray was glad that Joel was understanding.
There was next year, after all, assuming that Ray would be up for it.
The next day, the two traveled to work together—still silent as ever. Ray had no idea why. Even going into work, they didn't speak other than a little 'bye'.
When Ray walked into the room, all of the men looked up from their computers. “You're here late.” Michael commented.
“Am I?” Ray glanced at the clock. He had no idea that he had been running late. Maybe Joel did.
“Yep.” Michael smirked, a 'knowing' look on his face. “You guys did fuck, didn't you? A late fuck, that is. I mean, look at your hair. It's messy as fuck.”
Ray pursed his lips and he moved his hand up to touch at his hair—which, for some odd reason, was disheveled. Ray didn't know how it happened. Ray sighed and shrugged. “No.”
“You had to fuck.” Michael insisted.
“Nope. Didn't even cuddle on the couch.” Ray replied as he made his way to his computer desk.
“Damn, dude.” Michael said with shock. “I honestly thought you were fucking with me yesterday, but apparently you weren't.”
“Told you.” Ray replied, a proud smirk on his face. He wasn't even mad about Michael insisted that they fucked anymore—a proud feeling washed over Ray. Everybody expected Joel and Ray to use their day 'wisely', but they didn't even spend time together at all. They completely ruined the others' expectations, and it made Ray extremely giddy that he could pull it off.
Meanwhile, Joel walked into his own office. Burnie looked up from his computer desk. “Lame.” He mumbled and then looked back to his monitor.
Joel tossed down his backpack and shrugged. “Yeah? Hi to you, too.” Joel rolled his eyes and sat down in his desk.
“You guys didn't even fuck.” Burnie commented.
“Yup.” Joel paused. “We didn't even hang out.”
Burnie turned around, his eyebrow raised in question. “I don't know whether to feel angry or surprised.”
“Why are you and the others' so obsessed with the two of us fucking?” Joel asked, shaking his head. “Makes no fuckin' sense. I don't ask you if you and Ashley fucked, do I?”
“No. But we did.” Burnie nodded, full of pride. “Now you know.”
“Thanks. Just what I've always wanted to hear.” Joel replied sarcastically. “Sorry that we're a boring couple.”
Burnie shrugged and turned back to his computer again. “Whatever. I won't bother you anymore with it. It was kinda fun the first day but now it isn't.”
Joel didn't expect that to come out of Burnie's mouth, but he was glad. He took a deep breath and leaned back into his chair.
He needed to think of something to get for Ray next month on White Day—March 14th.
White Day occurs the month after Valentine's Day, and it's typically meant for the guy to give a gift (in returned) to their loved one. Joel was thinking of roses. It was Ray, why wouldn't he?
But instead of the usual red roses, Joel would get white ones. Hence the term 'White' Day and, actually, would be better than chocolates or jewelry.
So, fast forward a month. Joel walked into work, a White Rose bouquet in hand. He held it behind his back, knowing that it wouldn't help either way.
The first person who happened to be right outside of the Achievement Hunter office was Michael. He looked over and furrowed his brows. “What are you doing?”
Joel shrugged. “What are you doing?”
“Oh, you know. Hanging around.” Michael replied, quickly pacing over to Joel. He stepped behind Joel and pointed. “White roses, huh? I can only think of one person.” He paused. “But you fucked up the color, dude. Ray loves red roses.”
“I know.” Joel replied.
“So why did you fuck up and get the white roses?” Michael asked, crossing his arms.
Joel smirked and walked past Michael, not willing to answer. He, instead, opened the Achievement Hunter door and walked in, making his way around the messy room. Ray looked over from his monitor, and surprised look on his face. “The hell you doin' in here?” Ray asked, setting his controller down. It appeared that he had been playing a video game—Joel hoped that he wasn't in the middle of recording, but he couldn't tell. Out of the corner of his eye, Joel saw Michael walk in and stand beside the two.
Everybody in the room stopped what they were doing—Joel was often rare coming into the room when he doesn't have an Achievement Hunter video to record. Geoff noticed the roses in his hands and squinted at him. He pointed at them and made gestures to the rest of the men in the room.
“Ray.” Joel commented.
“Joel?” Ray asked, confused. “What's up?”
Joel shrugged. “Well, today's White Day. So I figured that I would get you a gift.” Joel pulled the roses out from behind his back, and presented them to Ray. “So, I got you roses. I would have gotten red but, since it's White Day, I got the white ones instead.” Joel smiled. “Happy White Day.”
Ray chuckled. “I'm pretty sure that isn't how it goes, but all right. I'll accept it.” Ray grabbed the roses and held them towards his chest. Ray smiled and stood up from his computer chair, wrapping his arms around Joel and pulling Joel closer to himself.
The other men watched in awe. When the two pulled away, Michael spoke up.
“The fuck's a 'White Day'?” Michael asked. “It looks like you're doing a late celebration of Valentine's Day.”
Joel shook his head and he turned to face Michael. “Not really. It's not late, at all.”
Michael opened his mouth to speak, but he shut his mouth immediately afterward and took a deep breath. “You guys are weird.”
Joel and Ray looked at each other, exchanging another smile. “Yeah,” Ray replied. “I guess you could say that.”
