This man, who – quite literally – stumbled into her life just a few short days ago, is on his best way to turn her life upside down. Somehow, he managed to weasel his way into her head, breaking tiny cracks into the carefully erected walls around her heart – laugh by laugh, look by look, touch by touch.
To add to that, he managed to not only gain some of her trust, but also to gain enough of it for her to show him her quiet place – the garden.
The garden.
The only place she can come to when the weight of the world, of her past, gets too heavy for her to carry on her shoulders.
“Man, Bella, I’m telling you…” Belladonna purrs as Erin runs her fingers gently through the soft fluff beneath the stray’s chin. “I never, never would’ve thought that I could trust someone this easily ever again.”
‘It’s too soon,’ the voice in the back of her mind whispers. ‘You’re moving too fast.’
‘What if he’s just like him?’
Getting up from the couch, Erin moves to the kitchenette, reaching up to grab a glass from the cabinet to fill with water. Taking a sip, she leans against the counter, the lights still out, her apartment cast in darkness only broken by the dim light of the moon creeping through the curtains.
‘He isn’t, though.’
Lando is gentle, radiating kind energy, his smile and laughter bright like sunshine.
Marcus on the other hand… Marcus was like quicksand. Luring you in with his innocent demeanour, his deceiving looks, before pulling you down into your unavoidable demise.
You kick and scream and try to claw your way out, but it’s no use, and eventually you just give in to the warm feeling of his grains seeping into your mouth, your nose, your eyes, until he has swallowed you up completely.
Until nothing but darkness is left.

now that we all survived the absolute mess that was the Canadian GP (i am still heartbroken for Lando), i will get back to writing.
i'm in a bit of a slump at the moment, not really feeling creative, but as a little teaser for chapter 9 (and to celebrate over 1k hits on ao3, jeez y'all are crazy), here's a moodboard!
not really sure when i will upload the next chapter, but i'll keep you posted. 💚
i always forget to post excerpts, i'm so sorry 😭 so here's an extra long one from chapter 7 👉👈
WARNING: very angsty, potentially triggering to some people.
Her phone vibrating snaps her out of her half-asleep state and she grabs it, pausing the video. A smile spreads on her lips even before she checks who the message is from. Surely it’s Lando, telling her he made it back to the Bed & Breakfast.
Her blood runs cold when she reads the message from an unknown number.
UNKNOWN. 9.53 pm: 'Had fun on your little date tonight, sugarplum?'
Erin stares at the message, hands trembling. Her vision blurs, her heart racing in her chest as she sits up straight, the blanket slipping from her shoulders, the fabric pooling at her waist.
No. No way.
Images flash before her eyes – her, staring at herself in the mirror, dark bags under her eyes and bruises all over her body. A glass bottle being thrown, shattering in a loud crash, red liquid splashing all over the wall. Him, Marcus, shouting at her until her ears ring before pulling her into his arms and slurring meaningless apologies into her ear.
His calloused hands all over her body.
His breath hot on her skin.
The phone falls out of her hands onto the mattress, and within a split second, Erin stands.
Cautiously, she cracks open her bedroom door, peeking into the dark hallway. Listening, waiting for something to happen.
When the only sound are Belladonna’s paws padding through the living room, she advances.
Making her way into the kitchen, she grabs the biggest knife she owns before creeping back to the hallway.
Her heart pounds in her chest, blood rushing in her ears when she cautiously peeks through the peephole of her front door.
Darkness. No sound, no movement. Nothing.
Knuckles white around the knife handle, Erin waits for a few more seconds before checking if her door is locked and the deadbolt holds steady.
Then she checks the peephole again.
Then the lock.
When she’s eighty percent sure that no one can break down her door, she creeps into the living room, knife still in hand, and drags one of the chairs from her dining area into her bedroom, careful to not make too much unnecessary noise.
...
Cold shivers run down her spine when she finally creeps back into bed, putting the knife on her nightstand, handle pointed in her direction. For easy access.
Belladonna purrs when she settles on Erin’s stomach, making biscuits in the blanket, providing at least some sense of comfort in the unfolding chaos.
Cautiously, hands still trembling slightly, she picks up her phone. Brows knitted together, she reads the message again. And again.
And again.
She tries to reason with herself – maybe it’s Pablo playing a prank on her. Or Meridia, drunk in one of the few nightclubs in town, texting her from a stranger’s phone.
But the pet name makes her stomach churn.
Sugarplum.
That’s what he used to call her.
...
When the first whispers of dawn creep through the blinds, the first birds quietly chirp, the first fisher boats leave the docks, Erin finally succumbs to her exhaustion.
