Following an incident of which Veronica was involved in and resulted in her being hospitalized and her best friend dying, she decided to take off and leave her old life behind; changing her name, taking a job as a waitress, concealing her true identity in the hopes of evading her parents forever. Veronica was born into a wealthy family who is business orientated thus image orientated and their daughter was reckless and gained a lot of attention which they didn’t quite approve of. As a teenager, Veronica rebelled against her parents and engaged in things rich kids did due to the money and fame her family had, but after the accident, she woke up and realized she didn’t want to be that person anymore. Therefore, Veronica took her chance to leave her family and her old self behind after recovering from the accident with the aid of her now deceased grandmother who left her granddaughter a substantial share in the Caldwell business. Veronica, now known as Liza, has been doing great the last few years, making herself into a better person and thinking she is completely rid of her horrible family. However, her father is adamant to get his daughter back due to the shares she holds in their business. Here is where Adrian comes into play; an ex NYPD officer who now runs his own business as a self-employed Private Investigator. Ultimately, the Caldwell’s hire Adrian to track their daughter down and upon his initial encounter with the Caldwell’s he firmly believes their daughter will be as rude and obnoxious as her parents but nevertheless, he accepts the job and begins straight away.
After a while of obtaining valuable information on Veronica, Adrian manages to track her down in L.A where she works in a local diner which is where he decides to visit, posing as an American businessman named Conor, to try and gain her acquaintance and retain more information about her. It becomes apparent to him that she is nothing like her family which makes him wonder why her family is so desperate to find her and bring her home, as well as why she escaped her old life in the first place. Usually, Adrian sets aside any curiosity he might find himself having and normally doesn’t give a damn about the people he’s tracking etc. but with Liza/Veronica, he can’t help but feel there is more at play than was initially divulged to him. He soon finds himself intrigued by her as well as continuing with the case and regularly keeping her family updated per their request. Adrian would continue to spend a good amount of time coming into the diner and pretending to be an everyday customer, talking to her more and more in an attempt to try and build some kind of friendship with her in order to get to know her better. There would be a lot of late night talks and interactions because Adrian would be smooth af and come to visit the diner just before closing time and when it is quiet, so he might every now again get her to talk with him more because there’s no other work to be done.
He would offer to walk her home late at night because her neighborhood would probably not be best in the city, just walk her home and watch her get inside? She would probably many times think about inviting him in but he’s too much of a gentleman to give her even the chance to ask him inside and she is careful about trusting him for quite some time. All of these gestures and all of these talks, she’s basically all oblivious who he actually is and why he comes around so much, he knows things about her and actively seeks her out to build a friendship with his ulterior motives in mind. But what do they know, she starts trusting him while he slowly starts caring about her while learning things about her that aren’t in his files about her. Throughout their conversations, she keeps her past a secret still even though she is beginning to trust him more. At some point, she might get hassled by some guy and he’d step in to be like “excuse me but who do you think you’re talking to pal?” and she’d probably be like, “well, he’s kind of a gentleman” which would be further enhanced by him walking her home and never trying to go inside with her. But all the while he'd actually be growing fond of her deep down inside, which would make him feel bad about reporting back to her parents and the idea of handing her back to them when he doesn’t trust them.
One evening he goes into the diner and they’re talking and he’s like “you’re always here, do you ever get out of here?” and he insists she joins him for drinks at a bar and because she trusts him, she agrees and they go get some drinks and have a good time and for a while he forgets who he actually is and what his actual motives are. She becomes a tad drunk and he brings her back to his motel room (maybe because they would have been closer while caught by a storm or just because they would have already built the kind of friendship where it was just a spontaneous but also a natural decision) and they would wind up laughing and chatting on his couch and maybe there would be that spontaneous kiss (probably on her end because she would be drunker and they would still have obvious attraction) but the wee make out would end when he’d be a gentleman once again and he would back off before things could carry any further because he’d be thinking about his job and the guilty conscience. She’d end up sleeping there innocently and then he’d go off to get her coffee in the morning (never thinking she might find stuff about her at his place and at this point he might actually consider dropping the case and saying he lost her blah blah) and while he is gone, she wakes up and incidentally ends up snooping around his place, stumbling across a folder with her name on it which would alert her and naturally, she would take a look inside. With him out of the way it would give her ample time to look at all the documents, photographs, information and notes he’s taken on her which would result in her discovering he is actually a Private Investigator who had been hired by her family to find her and bring her back to them.
Meanwhile, Adrian would be on his way back and on the phone to her parents like “you know what, I lost her, I’m sorry but I can’t help you anymore” because he’s had a change of heart and actually cares about her and doesn’t want her untrustworthy family getting their hands on her. While he’s calling it quits on the case regardless of the large sum of money he was promised if successful in the end, Veronica has fled his motel and made her way back to her own place. As he’s about to go inside his own motel, he’s internally deciding whether or not he should come clean to her or burn all of the stuff he has in her and forget about it, so he can try and properly be with her. Little does he know, she already knows everything and is packing to flee once again. When he’d go inside, she would be gone and at first, he would be all ??? then he’d spy the open folders and documents etc. and be like !!! and immediately go after her. When he’d find her attempting to leave her new life behind, he would be “where are you going? You can’t just leave again, you can’t be a ghost forever” and he’d try and give her a pep talk, but she’d beg him not to hand her over and to let her run away, let her disappear forever. She might even decide to lay it all on the table about why she fled in the first place and just exactly what type of people her family is. He would tell her he’d already told them it was over, he was no longer helping them but with time running out for her, Adrian wouldn’t know what to do and Veronica would feel betrayed by him because she actually cared about him and considered him a friend she could trust but from her perspective, all he was doing was lying to her and spying on her, which wouldn’t be the case as he cares for her also.
Eventually, a confrontation would take place and she would ask him if anything he ever told her was real considering even his name was fake and he would try and explain to her, but she would have none of it and lay into him. Essentially he has been lying all along so from her point of view, he must have been lying about everything and faking how he felt for her on even a friendship level which he denies and admits he somewhere along the way developed feelings for her and actually wants to be with her but she would feel violated and insist they could never work built on lies; almost convinced he was lying even now and asking how she is supposed to believe his feelings are real given all of the lies he’s told before.
Adrian, finally admitting the feelings he had developed for the female upon their spent hours together, tries to apologize to Veronica for betraying her trust and conning her. In the beginning, Veronica is reluctant about his apologies and trying to make him go away. But we also discussed about her family coming after her after finding out where she is, and either that Adrian would catch her just in time to see her fleeing or that Adrian would be the one to warn her about her family and help her flee before her family would get there. Maybe he could even be the one to convince her to hop into his car and drive her away just in time? Why am I just now thinking that maybe her family would witness the two leaving?
