Veggie-Powered Adventure
With Nick Fredette in town for a few days and his newly veggie-powered VW Jetta, we decided to go on an adventure north through the islands of Vermont. We filled up the veggie tank and drove into North Hero, Vermont. We saw all the ice fishers out on Lake Champlain and figured we should see what it was all about. We were greeted by every fisherman with stories of their biggest catch and the other ones that got away. The process has been the same for many years. They would bore their holes in the ice, set lines with bait, and wait in their propane heated huts till a flag sprung up on their lines indicating they caught a fish. Once the fish is on the line, the battle continued to tire out the fish and slowly reel them in. Northern Pike was the desired fish for the day and the family we hung out with were able to pull in 2 fish about 30 inches long in the 45 minutes we were there. The spirits were high as the sun started to set, flags were going up and Nick and I had a ways further to go. We continued our drive further north and made it all the way around Isle La Mont before the sun had set. We called it a day once it got dark, and drove the veggie vehicle back to Burlington knowing that all 80 miles we drove were powered by grease being discarded by Whole Foods.
